How Nintendo makes the video game industry look good

For years, people like Jack Thompson have been spewing invective in an attempt to bring the video game industry to its knees. And while he and the rest of his cronies have done all they can to paint the picture that the entire video game industry is rife with sex, drugs and violence, Nintendo has led the way in showing the world that that's not even close to true.

Last week, AJ Pierzynski of the Chicago White Sox was asked why he spent hours during spring training playing with his Nintendo DS. Instead of telling the reporters that he tried to kill 15 men in 10 seconds, he explained that he was playing a vision-training game on the device to improve his ability to see the baseball.

Of course, Pierzynski's use of the DS isn't the only "non-violent" use of video games today and many people have found the DS and Wii to be bastions of fitness, health and fun. And although others are trying to carry the torch with Nintendo, no company in the video game industry has done what the hardware and software manufacturer has been able to do: show the world that there's more to video games than violence and sex.

Just don't tell Jack Thompson that.

Too often, Nintendo is taken to task for being too "kiddie." When a parent tries to decide which console they want to buy for their young children, more often than not, they'll choose a Wii or DS because the library of games is more suitable to children of that age. Granted, there are some titles that may not, but Nintendo has gone out of its way to make sure its games are fun, innovative and especially, non-violent.

And yet, Nintendo is caught between a rock and hard place. There's a certain group of people that look at Nintendo and commend the company for doing what it can to turn the tide of violence and sex in video games. On the other hand, a vocal group tries to condemn the firm for not offering the kind of content it believes most people want.

And while both sides have a point, I don't care either way. The way I see it, if you want games for children, the Wii and DS are your best bet. If you don't, pick up a copy of Rainbow Six Vegas 2and enjoy yourself. And either way, you can buy a Wii and play some of those mature titles right on the console.

But I digress. Some people don't see Nintendo in that light. To some, Nintendo has been and always will be the last stronghold of games for children. But I think that argument is pure rubbish. Are Nintendo games less violent? Sure. Do they appeal more to the kid in you than the soldier in you? Yep. But are they any less fun to play? Of course not.

Nintendo has been able to do something that no other company in the industry is willing nor capable of -- create compelling gameplay for people of all ages without using sports or violence to do it.

And ironically, it's the hardcore gamers who don't have Nintendo red running through their veins that find the most fault with the company. But if those people took a step back and evaluated what's really going on, they would quickly realize that what Nintendo is doing for the industry goes far beyond their own preference for violent video games or more mature titles.

Unlike any other developer, Nintendo is carrying the torch as a way to refute all of Jack Thompson's claims and show the world that video games are not the safe haven of violence and antipathy, but the realm of eclectic tastes and entertainment, fitness and education for people of all ages.

Claiming violent video games are the root of all evil may be an easy claim for some that only see what they're looking for. But thanks to Nintendo, those that hate video games have few examples at their disposal to show us that the industry really is evil.

And although some may criticize Nintendo for staying true to its principles of fun and innovative gameplay without the gore, I think we should commend it on a job well done. After all, it's first company we cite when we've had enough of Jack Thompson.

Good article, though I look at the games Nintendo makes to be open and instead of focusing on the controversy GTA, God of War, and anything with blood/sex/violence which gets sales cause of the controversy and image, they focus on quality and fun, the thing is the people that buy the violent and sexual games are mostly kids, working at a game store I know this to be true cause parents buy GTA for their kids all the time or kids come to trade in their GTA games.

To tell the truth most violent games are for immature people, mostly kids, so I hate when people call Nintendo a kiddie console, they just have kid friendly games that really are for "mature" audiences cause anyone with maturity shouldn't care to see digital boobs or blood just want something GOOD.

A game shouldn't focus on the violence or language and only use it if its tactful, example is the Resident Evil series, it feels like a good horror movie everything is tasteful and has some class while still being brutal and fun, example of being over the top and just stupid, God of War, WHY do we need women with their boobs popping out? where did that even come from? why all the senseless violence and rapid button pressing? It all seems a bit forced and focused on sex and violence without a good game included, so who is this marketed to? Kids of course =)

Most of the ones saying nintendo is for kids are the ones who are in the range of 13-19... thats tight teenagers.

I'm 27 years old and I own all three (wii,ps3,Xbox360) guess wich console I have most game on???

funny note, in my family there are 5 Wii's, 1(me) Xbox360, 1(me) PS3

and with my "closest" friends( about 8 of them ) there are 6 Wii's, 0 Xbox360, 0 PS3

@ Naum I agree when people say Nintnendo is a kids company thoes kind of people tend to ignore the other games that attract an older demographic (Metroid, F-Zero, Star Fox, The Legend of Zelda etc) where the mario franchise attracts ALL and i mean ALL ages not just kids)

::chuckle:: I think it's funny. It really is mostly the teenage age group that calls Nintendo 'kiddie'. The same age group that is embarrassed to be seen with their parents 8).

Blood/sex/violence and fun are not mutually exclusive.  The God of War games got great sales because they were excellent games.  The violence in God of War is completely appropriate to the character and mythology.  While I'd say the sex minigames and the like were unnecessary, they still fit who Kratos was.  There have been plenty of excessively violent games that bomb in sales, because they weren't fun.

i agree w/ yakuzaice (sorry maxwell lol)
but God of War used nudity and over the top violence
in a creative way. The game would have been crap
had it not been that way. I wonder if 300 would have
been half as good with all the gore & nudity.
While i understand that a lot of these types of
videogames are for immature kids, some are for
adults.

While the gameplay of Nintendo branded games are mature I have to say there is one avenue that Nintendo needs to improve upon to be seen as a mature gaming machine, and that's the story. Many Nintendo games have empty shells of a story, with the only notable Nintendo developer even trying being Intelligent Systems, and I commend them for it. How much further is Nintendo gaming to be stuck in that 8-bit "story doesn't matter" mentality when we've come to a time where benchmarks of storytelling like Mass Effect and Bioshock are pushing where stories can head to and Nintendo is just now trying out voice acting. That's a 10 year old experiment for most developers that have shown what voices can do to enhance story and here's Nintendo yet again bringing up the rear when they're not the one to innovate. That always seems to be Nintendo's mantra, either first to the table or arriving during dessert with little in between.

I completely disagree. If anything, Nintendo has been putting more dialog in their games since the 8-bit era as a result of influence from other game companies doing so.

I realy hate it when I see any dialog in a Nintendo game. I don't care about the plot, just give me the game already!

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Bah I don't see whats "fun" about pressing the same button combos over and over until whatever you're attacking is dead... Devil May Cry is a far better series that follows the same play type and uses the M rating well... The only thing the God of War series brought was the action buttons you had to hit at certain times, but that had been used ever since the Genesis days so nothing really new there... And it doesn't fit the mythology well but that's another story... A lot of the senseless violent games that have failed were never hyped or got media coverage, kids buy anything they see as "cool" on TV or in a magazine.
