Forums - Sony Discussion - Recommend me a good PS1/PS2 JRPG

Tagged games:

Well After the top 50 games thread, and the upcoming release of XenoBlade in Canada, I've been on a JRPG craze. Working on FFXIII right now, and compared to a lot of older JRPG's it's just utter crap (auto recover, and auto attack, really?). I'm looking at selling some of my old crummy games and trading them in for some old JRPG's at a local Retro games store. I already have an extensive JRPG collection, but my PS1 and PS2 systems could use more games. Been wondering if people could give me some recommendations.

I already own Chrono Cross, XenoGears and Final Fantasy IX, but plan to work on them

Not new to the JRPG world, beat FFX and played most of FFVII and FFXII. Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG are two of my favorite JRPG's, but I also love Lost Odyssey and I think the games I referenced are the type of games I will be nuts for. I have a list of the better rated games, but I want to know why individuals liked specific titles, and if it's still worth playing.

Below is a list of Playstation and Sega JRPG's I wish to own one day, those crossed out I already have. I can't afford all these at full price, but you would be surprised what you can find garage sale hunting.

Alundra
Brave Fencer Musashi (Reminds me of Goemon: Mystical Ninja)
Breath of Fire III, IV and maybe V
Chrono Cross
Crisis Core: FFVII
Dark Cloud 1 & 2
Dragon Quest VII (Opinions?)
Dragon Quest VIII
Drakengard 1 & 2
Final Fantasy Anthology
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII
Front Mission 3 & 4
Grandia 1, 2 and maybe 3 (If I can afford it, I know this series is expensive)
Jeanne d'Arc
La Pucelle: Tactics
ICO
Legend of Dragoon
Shadow Hearts: Covanent
Star Ocean: First Departure
Star Ocean: The Second Story/Second Evolution
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Suikoden 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Tactics
Tales of Legendia/Desitiny/Desitiny 2/World
Vagrant Story
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Valkyrie Profile 1, 2, Lenneth and CotP (DS)
XenoGears
XenoSaga 1
, 2, 3

Dreamcast

Grandia 2 (If I find it for DC, I'll get it for this system)
Shemue
Skies of Arcadia (Either Dreamcast of Gamecube, I own both consoles)

I will also likely pick up Ogre Battle for N64.

Note: I plan to get Tales of the Abyss for 3DS. I played it on PS2, and I definatly liked it.

Any more suggestions? For those who have played the Lunar franchise, what is it like?

This is a dream list of mine to....well with my Nintendo, Sega, and MS collection, complete my video game collection up to 1990 (exclusing Sega 32X and Saturn). It will take me a while to complete, but man will I enjoy playing these games when I get them all.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant  It's the second one, it got really good reviews. And it's my 2nd favorite PS2 JRPG to FFX.
It's also developed by a large of the amount of people who co-developed lost odyssey. Nauhtilus or something like that they changed their names like 3 times.
I actually found the Lost Odyssey battle system, a worse version of the judgement ring that's in this series.

Persona 3 FES (though this had only control 1 character like FFXIII,  great story), and Persona 4 (doesn't have this issue, but worse story and characters imo)

I didn't really like many PS2 JRPG's.

PS1.
Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve (Make Sure 1, 2 imo sucked). Parasite is probably my favorite story from the PSX generation.
and Suikoden II. Those are kind of staples that everyone recomends though.

I thought legend of dragoon was like power rangers. It entertained me, but don't really ever want to touch it again. I find it's talked about too hightly here even though it was more hokey, and had a decent battle system for back then, but it's been down way better since.

Valkyrie Profile 1 & 2. Both are quite mature JRPG's with great art styles and extremely satisfactory battle systems.

*hugz*

Alundra 2 is an Action RPG Puzzle game. A hidden gem from PS1 era. I couldn't think of anything else since a poster above made a list of pretty much every RPG in existence.

i am not sure if you said if you had it but FFX in PS2 is easily the best JRPG for the system.

Of those you didn't mention my favorites are:
Grandia
Persona 3:FES and Persona 4
Kingdom Hearts I + II
FFX-2 (well, many people hate it though.. I love it, think it's a great game in its own right :p)

I'd say you missed Valkyrie Profile, and this though not on PSX was on N64 and was great: Ogre Battle 64.
Final Fantasy tactics was also a big game.

I heard both Kingdom Hearts games were unforgettable on the PS2, and if you'll mention Ico, why not try Shadow of the Colossus?

And it seems you yet have to get your hands on FFVIII, incredible game.

Other series that come to mind are Suikoden, Lunar and Star Ocean. I haven't played much of Suikoden or Star Ocean but my friend told me great things about them, I only played a bit of Lunar 2, it was good but I got bored. Cutscenes were really nice there though and tactics were cool.

Vagrant Story was interesting, but a little too slow for me.

Xenogears (which you already own) and Final Fantasy 8 were my two favourites - but I also really liked Final Fantasy 7, Vagrant Story, and the Wild Arms games. Final Fantasy 9 felt more like a watered down FF7, a little more generic in flavour as well - not saying it is bad (I like the game a lot), but take FF7 over it.

If you like Chrono Trigger, get your hands on Skies of Arcadia (for Dreamcast and Gamecube disk for Wii) which has a very similar battle system, character cast, and mood.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Grandia I and Grandia II (because the other sequels sucks)
Vagrant Story
Shadow Hearts (the 3 games....the graphics of the first one suck, but it is a great game)
Star ocean: Till the end of time.
Final Fantasy VIII
Breath of Fire III, IV, V (called Dragon quarter). Great games, the best of those is IV.
