As I am falling farther and farther behind, I will reveal my games in batches.
#50 | Clanfolk |
---|
platform | Windows |
release year | 2022 |
developer/publisher | MinMax Games/Hooded Horse |
genre | colony sim |
links | Steam / website / trailer |
| This is a colony sim, that gameplay wise takes strong pointers from Rimwold (which itself is sprung from Dwarf Fortress), but pushes it into the direction of simulating the life of a clan in the scottish highlands in the middle ages. So reach your new home, build houses, find food and other resources and grow your family and clan.

#49 | Halls of Torment |
---|
platform | Windows |
release year | 2024 |
developer/publisher | Chasing Carrots |
genre | survivor |
links | Steam / trailer |
| After Vampire Survivors blew up many games followed which copy certain elements, as they are distinct from other game style I call that survivor games (they existed before Vampire Survivors, but that popularized it). Halls of Torment is one of these Survivor games. Your character goes through a level and either automatically or per click attacks the hordes of enemies coming at you. The experience they drop you can use to improve your character and stay alive longer. Halls of Torment specializes in a feel a lot like the first Diablo: dark, gritty fantasy. With that is has NPCs that talk to you, goals to finish and equipment for your adventurer. So that the next dive into the Halls of Torment let you go farther. |
| Before Double Fine stopped being an indie they made some great games, including Costume Quest and Costume Quest 2. I played this game back on the WiiU and had a lot of fun with turn based combat and abilities based on the costumes. And who doesn't want to save Halloween! |
#47 | Mercury Meltdown Revolution |
---|
platform | Wii |
release year | 2007 |
developer/publisher | Ignition Entertainment |
genre | puzzle platformer |
| The motion controls of the Wii inspired many to try out to use that for game ideas. One of the better games is Ignitions transformation of their Mercury Meltdown series to Wii motion control. Generally in Mercury Meltdown you tilt the stage to move the main object, similar to games like Monkey Ball. But in this case it is a blob of mercury you move, a liquid. So you can finish levels without saving all of the blob, losing parts on the way. You can split it to solve puzzles and they have a mechanic to colorize a blob to use for switches. Using the Wiimote for tilting feels very natural, this is an actual good fit for the motion controls. |
#46 | Steamworld Heist |
---|
platform | Linux/Switch |
release year | 2015 |
developer/publisher | Image & Form |
genre | turn based tactics shooter |
links | Wikipedia / Steam / trailer |
| Image & Form has now for some time developed their brand of Steamworld games. This game features the Steambots in piracy to bring water to poor planets. The gameplay is turn-based, but the shooting is done freely by you and includes ricocheting bullets. Also the game has physics, so your (and the enemies) actions can lead to chain effects. |
#45 | Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords |
---|

platform | DS/Switch |
release year | 2010 |
developer/publisher | Infinite Interactive |
genre | puzzle/RPG |

| I played this game on the Nintendo DS and it was a nice game to play on the go. It is an RPG where you choose a character to solve an upcoming problem for your kingdom - which turns into an epic quest as there is more involved than meets the eye. Gameplay is quite simple for such a story centered game: you move on the overwolrd map from and to marked locations, more of which you unlock while playing. Fight are fought in a match-3 puzzle game, where the matched bubbles turn into mana for your characters abilities. |
