Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Dragon Quest IX ... getting BAD reviews?!?!

I don't care about graphics as long as they are SNES+ quality... I couldn't take it seriously because of the artstyle (related to graphics, too ). Heck, FF VI is my 3rd favorite game of all time and I played it for the first time in 2007.

Also, it all comes down to how the game itself looks... DQ VII's characters were designed so that you get their basic looks, and your imagination takes care of the rest... at least its like that with me.

DQIX looks much better than DQVII.  The graphical style for DQVII is being used for the remakes of DQIV-VI.  You should see the difference.

And really now, you are not giving credit to DQIX for such things as allowing you to customize your characters apperance, having visable armor/weapons/accessories in and out of battle and a fully interactive world.

Edit: Sorry, I thought you said FFVII.

Now I've only played DQIV and DQI, but that looks a LOT like the demon king from DQIV.... or maybe Psaro the Manslayer.

Well now, you'll just have to play DQVII to find out who it is, lol.  But be careful...the game is notoriously long and not for the feint of heart.  Like...120-150 hours long.

Gotta get through DQV first!

Why is DQ VII so long anyway? I mean the story isn't intensive, right? Or is it like DQ VIII where you just do a lot of stuff going from place to place on a big world map (random battles don't help). Because I've already clocked 4 hours just getting up to the crystal ball part (I have it and back in town now) and I can tell this game's going to be pretty long...

The game is broken up into small indavidual stories (or quests if you will) where you go looking for pieces of the world.  Unlike nearly every other DQ game where you have the freedom to explore the world map and complete the game as you wish, this game makes you do things based on triggers of finding pieces of the world and going through portals.  Depending on your view, the game doesn't even 'start' until 25-30 hours in.

What the hell are you making out of me? a "kiddy" troll? a sony fanboy? gee, the people here are touchy. With the way DQ IX looks, how the hell am I supposed to take it seriously? I really mean it, I don't need to troll games for MY FAVORITE portable platform!

I'm making you out to be a self-described "hardcore gamer" whose taste in games appears to be driven more by the endocrine system than by the nervous, because that is exactly and precisely the attitude you are projecting.

How are you supposed to take it seriously, you ask? The same way you take any other game seriously, and perhaps more to the point, the same way you took games seriously before you got so attached to something indistinguishable from hormone-driven narcissism.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

I'd wait for a real review before I flamed the game.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Personally, I find it kind of silly that people are taking characters drawn by Akira "Dragon Ball" Toriyama as somehow being "not kiddy".

And "grindtastic" doesn't necessarily equal "challenging", nor does "Guide Dangit" necessarily mean "deep".

Just my thoughts.

I have the game and have put in a good 12 hours already. Though not as good as DQ 8 I find I am still enjoying the game.

Please, the charade is up. Stop pretending like you like Dragon Quest and bash DQ9 for the same reasons as everyone else. This "art style" whining is pure BS.

Umm? I never said that I like DQ. I don't really hate it either. I'm just saying that the art-style really turns me off... unlike the other parts of the series... in which I never could get in... because of other reasons.

@ Millenium: Hormone driven narcissism? what the hell does narcissism have to do with anything? narcissism is self-love, how is it related to my taste in games? also, what is this strange way of enjoying games while not being driven by the endocrine system? you do know that it's very much active in deciding moods, right? you play games to enjoy yourself, right? if so, you can't do without an endocrine drive...

@ Kenryoku: Well, a terrific feature no doubt (who doesn't like to stare at their characters in new shiny armor?), overall, it doesn't really change much...

You're taking a friendly argument too far, guys...

My point stands, Xen.

Being too kiddy or childish is just valid a complaint as people saying the game is too brown and grey.

No, actually, it isn't. The former is nothing more than the bleating of an immature adolescent males -in mindset, if not necessarily in body- trying desperately to prove to themselves that they're ready for more than they truly are by denying themselves the things they once enjoyed and had no reason to stop enjoying. The latter at least requires a modicum of thought into the game's style, as opposed to knee-jerk fits of hormonal rage.

What the hell? How could be any more assuming? So, if I were to complain about babification (word I just invetned to describe over simplification and make it overly childish) it instantly makes me an immature adolescent makes that is just giving knee jerk fits of hormonal rage? Screw that.
