#43 - Super Paper Mario (Wii) [ ↓ 9 ]

Super Paper Mario gets a lot of shit for being the game that started the 'non-traditional Paper Mario', but these criticisms are entirely undeserved. Whilst SPM lacks the RPG gameplay and heavily Mario-world connected feel of its predecessors, the world and characters it introduces, and the gameplay through which it does so, are all incredible. It is unashamedly different, and it executes everything it sets out to extremely well. If Paper Mario had continued down this path (rather than the mess of its successors) I honestly would have been completely happy. An underappreciated gem of a game.

I agree that this game gets too much hate for not being like Thousand Year Door. The switching from 2D to 3D dynamic was really fun and it had some great moments like the famous nerd test:

#44 - Pokemon Conquest (DS) [ ↓ 9 ]

The last great Pokemon spinoff. Conquest is such a simple yet ingenious idea that it's shocking that it was neither attempted earlier nor since. Taking TRPG gameplay, medieval Japan as a setting, and throwing Pokemon into the mix, it was a blaze of creativity that culminated in one of the best games in the franchise. A sequel is very long overdue for this one, and one that fleshed out its gameplay further whilst expanding features would be a super hype announcement.

What is that? I never heard of that game. It uses tactical RPG gameplay with Pokemon in a feudal Japan setting? Why don't I own it? Why does a used copy cost more than 90€ (a sealed on 250)? What is wrong with the world?

Anyways, great picks with Pikmin and Katamari Damacy.

#42: Well, the Deluxe version of it, which multiplies it's amount of maps by 5 and adds tons of new unit types, but yes, Warlords 2 is correct. Really didn't expect anyone to find that one out already.

For those who don't know the game, you can play it online or download it for free (needs DosBox to run) at the internet archive: https://archive.org/details/msdos_Warlords_II_Deluxe_1995

#41: Nope, but that one is also on the list further down the line

It's my favorite Paper Mario game to date, mostly due to the story being much darker

Also, Mimi's transformation sequence:

Can be pretty unnerving the first time around. Don't think anybody expected her to do that!
