#29 - The best SMB game. No, it doesn't feature Mario.
#28 - This game is all about cake.

29: Super Meat Boy?

28: Maybe Mario 64, but I don’t think Peach is fat.

#29 is correct. #28... well, I guess I'll just give it to Darashiva. It actually is Portal.

Finally done with that, sorry for the insane spam. I've still some catching up to do, though, so here are a few more hints:

#29 - The best SMB game. No, it doesn't feature Mario.
#28 - This game is all about cake.
#27 - An indie game that was recently re-released on the Switch. It bears quite some resemblance to some Zelda games, most noticeably A Link to the Past gameplay-wise, and Majora's Mask in some of the world design. It has quite a dark atsmophere though, and some intense combat that's quite unlike most console games.
#26 - Remember when I said the creator of AM2R was now working for an indie developer? Well, this is the only game said indie developer has released so far.

28.  Portal, but that game is not about cake, because the cake is a lie.
27.  Binding of Isaac?

Nope. And I see I made a ridiculous error and turned under the burning suns into under the burning sons.

Hollow Knight
(Change YoY: NEW!)

In recent years the popularity of Dark Souls has brought us a slew of games trying to emulate its style and gameplay, but the vast majority of them are just poorly designed and cheap copies that completely miss the entire appeal of Dark Souls. However, there have been some genuinely great games that have come out of this as well, and perhaps the best so far is Hollow Knight. It features the kind of interconnected world, difficult gameplay and lore hidden in the small details of the world that Dark Souls does so well, while changing and adding enough of its own things to stand out on its own as well. After seeing so many games miss the point of Dark Souls by just being punishingly difficult without any thought put into it, Hollow Knight was a revelation.

This was, and is, the second best game of 2017 in my opinion, and the best "soulslike" game not developed by FromSoftware I've played so far. Dark Souls is one of my favourite game series ever, and to see other developers taking inspiration from it and finding new and interesting ways to approach the formula is just awesome.

Also, no guesses for this one yet, so here are some additional hints for it.

#27:

This game starts a new subseries within this franchise.

Takes place after the events of another trilogy in the series, and during two other games which have so far not been released in the west.

The main characters are members of a special class in a military academy.

Takes place in the Erebonian Empire.

First of four games in this particular subseries. The last two have not been released in the west yet.

SoulCalibur

  • SEGA Dreamcast
  • 1999
  • Fighting
  • Namco

The only fighting game on the list. 'SoulCalibur' is without a doubt the best one in the genre, and with a decent margin at that. It is probably the concept of the game that drew me towards the series initially. Instead of the usual 'martial arts' type of fighting, the characters in this series specialize themselves in weapon proficiency. So the fighting will be done with swords and staffs and a couple of fantasy weapons for the most part.

And that works, gameplay is absolutely excellent here. The game came out during the time in which it was still popular in our family to sit around a console playing local-multiplayer. During the peak of this time, we had entire tournaments together. Personally, I was always the character "Nightmare" and I got fairly good at it. It's a time that's pretty nostalgic to me, and a time I wouldn't mind it coming back.

Besides the fighting, the game had a fun single-player mode where the player must complete missions, a concept which still holds up today. It was really a game that turned heads when it came out. In fact, I should credit the game's Dreamcast version which I played, as being the game that made the PlayStation 2 'unnecessary'. Graphically, it was years ahead of it's time and to me it made the newer system seem like it wasn't much of an upgrade over the Dreamcast. And I never got it. I didn't get the best selling home video game console of all-time, by far, because of SoulCalibur.

I figured that one would be guessed... Anyway;

Jagged Alliance is a great game. At core it is a very well working tactics game. As long as no enemies are aroundin the sector, you play in real-time, for the action it switches to turn-based, so you can really think through what you wanna do. And then see your guys missing the target, getting angry and doing stupid shit and bleeding out on the battlefield.

One major point here is, you don't get some generic guys from a certain class or so, each single mercenary is unique. And they have their own will and wishes. You can very well have picked up a team, in which each member prefers to shoot one another, because they wanna take revenge or simply can't them. And well they do sometimes. But if you pick your team well and choose your challenges wise you win back sector for sector pretty fast.

The game offers you the map of the island, separated into sectors by overlaying a raster. You start off with control over one sector only and can attack neighboring sectors. So at the beginning you can choose between two sectors to attack, but the more you own, the more neighboring sectors controlled by the enemy you can attack.

You can attack multiple sectors in a day, but also the enemies are not sleeping. They might counter-attacking on one of your sectors. Also you need to loot, craft stuff, heal the wounded, repair stuff and so on. This game offers so much gameplay, every playthrough is different, the characters are interesting. It is just a great game.
