Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why is the Switch still not getting big games from 3rd parties? October edition

I would rather see more original content or 3rd party's 'borrowing' Nintendo characters ala 'Mario and Rabbids' or Starfox' appearance in Starlink than ports of COD and other so-called 'mature' and gritty stuff. Most of us couldn't care less for that sort of thing and the game developers know this.

And how much it cost? Because majority people won't spend over $300 for a handheld.

The Win 2 costs nearly $900. The $650 is just the promo kickstarter price and probably closely represents the break-even point such a device. But I'm totally sure Sony could make and sell one at less than half the size for less than half the cost.

Heh, Sony can because their fan said so.

There’s a bit of overlap in the markets, but AAA games typically aren’t in high demand for Nintendo platforms. It’s like trying to sell avengers at the local indie cinema: a film like Vertigo or Mulholland Drive will do a lot better. While some viewers in that crowd may enjoy superhero films, it’s not the bread and butter of that particular audience.

Games that work on Nintendo platforms tend to be more quirky, creative, and often with good local multiplayer functionality. While Nintendo gamers appreciate nice graphics, the definition of “nice” can mean 8-bit style sprites rather than something that requires 20 gigs of GPU ram to display. In contrast, games that do well on Nintendo consoles don’t tend to do as well elsewhere. Steam is probably the biggest competitor to Nintendo in much of the software that excels on Switch.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Exactly. And these games would sell better too.

So, for the record, you believe Mario and Rabbids, or Starlink will sell better than a Switch port of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4?

Yes for the first. Starlink has Fox people in it, but it isn't centered around Nintendo characters as much as the first one you mentioned. Not exactly sure how that one will sell.

According to VGchartz, the highest selling CoD game on a Nintendo device was CoD 3 for Wii at 2.24 million.

MRKingdom is already at 2.14 million and who knows with digital. By the time this generation is over it will easily be higher, and most CoD games have sold horribly or ok at best on Nintendo devices.

It barely runs PS3 games, why would developers spend money and time with a Switch version instead of just doing a better PS4/Xbox One version and sell a lot?

Based on what? Latest example is Diablo 3, game runs at 960p on Switch and at 584p on PS3.

Easy answer, extra profit, but problem is that plenty of devs dont have time and resources to port their games to Switch, thats why even 3rd party games that are coming to Switch are in most cases done but outside companies that are specialized for ports (Panic Button, Virtuous..).

Another factor to remember that while Sony doesn't compete that much against triple A third parties themselves, allowing them to shine and pushing the games as system sellers, a third party realesingvon a Nintendo platform has to fight an uphill battle VS ninty's own IPs for attention of the audience. You going to realese a JRPG as a Dev? Sorry, but mist switch owners will gravitate towards XC2 first. Racing? Mario kart. FPS? Splatoon

Perhaps you should look up the sales of first party PS4 games. The results might surprise you. Sony first party titles are selling higher than most Nintendo IPs all while third party sales are thriving, and they have multiple genres covered in their first party offerings. This seems like a pretty silly argument.
