"I would prefer my son to die in an accident than show up with a mustachioed man," he said."

I don't really see how that can be explained away...

First of all, its been 7 years.People change over the course of time.Second, As I have already said in my summary which you probably didnt read, Im not sugarcoating the things that he did say that werent appropriate or even right. This is one of them.It was a sad statement and that was it.I do believe, at least now for this scenario that was proposed to him, his stance on homosexuals is that he has nothing against them, and respects them.He just prefers that his son would be straight so that not only it would allign with his views but also would allow him to have grandchildren. And there is a difference betwenn accepting homosexuality, and respecting homosexuality.I think every needs to respect it, as in respect that one person made the decision to be homosexual. You dont need to like it, you just need to respect that person personal decision.I have many gay friends that also agree with me on this. And I mean, he already went on record time and time again on why he would go out of his way to make lifes of homosexuals harder if he has much bigger and actual problems to solve?

Anyway, thats not even the most important. The really sad thing is that, when people come to support Bolsonaro, the reasons they list why they support him is because of all his government proposals.Economical, educational, security related and whatnot. But when it comes to the supporters of Haddad and PT, the reasons they support him are usually because they think that Bolsonaro is "homphobic, racist, sexist" and whatnot, as if a president is some kind of celebrity and not a manager, and barely list any proposal as to why they find PT government proposal any good.Just saying.

Bolsonaro doesn't even have any proposals, otherwise he would go to the debates. Haddad has many proposals, some are good, other are bad, but some people are so lost in their rage against PT that won't listen.

You can say I'm biased, but everyone can see that you are way more, as you try to explain absurd things Bolsonaro said that should have got him arrested.

(Thought about putting this in general discussion, but went with politics so people can come in with a slight idea of what it's about.)

I don't wanna go too in-depth over the reasons because it'd only make things worse - after all, they are what saddened me in the first place. I live in Brazil, and if you know anything about what's going on in Brazil, well, basically we are on the verge of electing a fascist as president. He's racist, homophobic, sexist, highly religious, well, you know... all the usual stuff. Furthermore, he wants to legalize gun ownership in Brazil, and promotes violence constantly. He has quite some following, and in recent days they've done all sorts of awful shit, from killing someone's dog because "it barked too much" or killing an actual person for simply stating they prefer another candidate.

Today, I went to college. It was the first time I went someplace since before the elections happened (I'm not actually Brazilian, so I don't vote), and because I live in the middle of nowhere, I was pretty much distanced from everything while here. Being in society again was... frightening. Walking in the streets had me nervous, knowing that most passersby likely voted in that abomination (he had 62% votes in my town), and throughout the afternoon I felt strange, nervous and afraid, even though nothing particularly out of the ordinary happened. After class, though, I heard that, in a different campus of my own university, a student was attacked and gravely injured by this guy's followers. Turns out I'm not afraid of nothing (take the double negative here as a proper intended double negative).

Anyways... This is probably the first time in my life I've ever been truly depressed. I can't cheer up, I can't feel good about anything, I can't ease my consciousness with anything, in fact I can barely sleep some nights. It's been a few days and I continue to feel horrible. I'm terrified of what this country has become, terrified of the rampant fascism everywhere and even more terrified of the future. Furthermore, I'm also terrified about this seemingly being a somewhat global tendency, with countries like the USA, UK, Poland and more following similar political trends. People can think of nothing but violence and hate these days... Peace and love are seemingly dead last in everyone's priorities.

I don't know what I'll do, if anything. If this dude does get elected, surely I must find a way out of this country, but I'm not sure anywhere else is future-proof either. Maybe this truly is the start of a new dark age...

In lighter thoughts, don't worry, I'm not gonna do the whole "leaving VGC" thing. If anything, VGC is one of the few stress reliefs I can have at the moment, and it can be even more important with the greatest games event coming up. I just need to clear my mind at the moment.

I feel your pain. I live in Brazil too. Basically, we have to do anything and everything we can to prevent this crazy fellow from getting elected. He wants to bring back the dictatorship, and his base is being conned.

Basically, the political system is so FUCKED that people just want to see everything explode. I know this seems crazy, but it is the truth. Brazilian people are mad.

Problem is. It is difficult to reverse a dictatorship. Last time it happened in Brazil, it took many, many years to get democracy going. However, what we're gonna have now is a technological dictatorship. Once this genie gets out of the bottle, you can't put it back in. If this fellow wins, it's gonna be the end. We can't allow that to happen.

I think social issues are incredibly important, especially in a country where hate crimes against LGBT individuals aren't exactly uncommon. You can't just say that his comments about gay people don't matter. They do. These things fuel hatred and they fuel violence and they fuel the erosion of rights. I also don't think that those comments really do anything to alleviate concerns about gay rights, when he has stated as recently as last week that he opposes gay marriage:

Can tell you that you shouldn't feel bad at all because, to begin with, the election of Bolsonaro won't have anything to do with you at least in the middle term. Furthermore, if he plans to promote his platform, he'll need the support of the legislative cameras and the population as a whole, and thus he'll need to deal with the opposition, of which you'll need to cooperate a lot in the years to come.

On top of that, think of why a lot of people decided to elect him, it's not precisely because of his political views, it's because he's the strongest alternative against the laborist parties, most of which are considered corrupt nowadays.
Metallox said:
While it's true that 62% of the voters don't care about Bolsonaro's extremist views, I think it's important to note that a lot of them aren't necessarily ok with them, which is an important distinction. The economic crisis, corruption, increase in violence, these are all factors that made people sick of the PT

People should remember how Hitler actually came to power and what they said about him and the NSDAP in the beginning. Simply by elections and coalitions. And most people back then were pissed with other parties, desolate economy and things like this. Most Germans simply wanted jobs and yes, some strong alternative for change. Germans weren't more racist than French or British, a few years later Europe lay in ruins and millions of people, again millions of them jews, had been killed.

Yet in 1933 many Germans weren't necessarily ok with Hitler extremist views. But way too many elected him and his party.

I'll concede you there, but I was also trying to help OP to feel a little anxious, because I got the feeling he was exaggerating the situation quite a bit.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Hey Rabbit,

I am sad too, that there isn't a true and proper GotG3 anymore. But on a brighter note, we can now start chanting, 'Make DC Movies Great Again!!*'

* maybe, big maybe...well, probably not for a long while.

But in any case, glad you're more upbeat!!

In your heart, you know what to do...'Longing. Rusted. Furnace. Daybreak. Seventeen. Benign. Nine. Homecoming. One. Freight Car.'

As you quoted too many people I'll give my reply here.
I agree, walking out now is already more shitty than it was last year.
At least two times a week I take a walk home from work (around 40 minutes) with a colleage, and I did that yesterday, I was by chance using a red shirt and I had a kid that I think was no more than 4 years old, walking outside pre scholl with is a bit older sisters I suppose, start pointing his two fingers to me as if they were guns after looking at my shirt, and pretending to shot me and started laughing... right in front of me.
Something like that has NEVER happened before. I know kids play finger gun sometimes, I do, but something like that is just something else.
I hope you can get away of this country if you have a better option because foreigners won't be gladly accepted here anymore in some years.
We seem to mimic every shit that comes out of USA to even worse levels, and xenophobia will surely follow the future list of common absurdities like racism and homophobia that we are to see coming back (even as it never truly left) at full force.
Pretend you was never here and use the fact you were not born here to leave asap.

Yeah, walking outside dressed in red is as good as forbidden at the moment. Oh but don't worry, no one changed your rights. Everything is fine!

@Nautilus, I can't believe all the bullshit you're talking about. The first time anyone heard about Bolsonaro, circa 2011, was because of his homophobic comments. That was his rise to prominence in mainstream media, by making comments everyone despised. Over several years, he continued to show racism, homophobia, intolerance, extreme nationalism, xenophobia, mysogyny, as well as show support to the military dictatorship, including comments that encouraged people to torture and kill the opposition. For years and years, that was the only image every person had of him, but of course, it also meant that neo-fascists began to support him for the presidency.

In the last year, though, suddenly everyone's views changed. After the massive manipulative campaign on WhatsApp, fueled by people's hatred of PT (which is ridiculous when looking at all the other candidates available), everyone began to vote for him and say all those 6 years of hate comments and actions were just a bunch of lies or exaggerations made by the media, which of course, is exactly what he'd want you to believe. Suddenly, no one cares about how, in 28 years of being in the congress, he had barely any projects approved and voted against every law that benefited the people, and in favor of every law that benefited him. He had obvious marketing ploys, such as forging a stab attack only to avoid going into any political debate or interview since, instead showing up in loads of biased shows and posting videos speaking from a teleprompter.

I'm sorry, but you're fucking kidding yourself if you think any of that is a lie.

Forged a stab attack?Really? He got stabbed in the gut, that cut through parts on two different intestins and cut through a part of the liver(and the assailant twisted the knife, mind you), almost died in the way to the hospital(Thats not me saying it, the doctors themselves said it that if he were late an extra 5 minutes, he would be dead) and went through two different surgeries and now have to shit on a damn bag strapped to his side, and he forged an assasination? When every single journalist, right wing or left wing, doctor or whatnot said it was a serious and grave injury that was mere centimeters away from being fatal and you say he willingly devised a plan that could have easily killed him?Are you insane? And you are telling me I am saying bullshit? That the people that are supporting Bolsonaro are spewing and spreading hate, and you here saying that Bolsonaro lied when his life almost ended? Please, take a good look at the mirror because right there, is the perfect example of hypocrisy.

And stop throwing the name facism and nazism to anyone that dosent agree with your views. Its disgusting to see you use such strong use so freely when it has no meaning. For anyone with one good eye, known that all those allegations of  him being sexist machist, homophobic and so one are bullshit for the most part.Yes, he makes unfortunate statements from time to time, but its all taken out of context and exagerated. And before you complain about him not showing up in debates after he got stabbed(because people suddenly forgot that he participated in every single debate before the assasination attempt and was still raising in popularity without any aid of some conspiracy theory), I didnt know that you got stabbed in the gut and nearly died of it to be able to tell, better than doctors apparently, that Bolsonaro was more than healthy enough and had no danger to his well being to go to such an event.Glad that you are not thowing any hate around.

*sigh* And this is why Brazil is such a shitty country.

Bolsonaro do have great proposals, thats why he went to every debate before he got physically unable to go.Unless you were also stabbed in the gut and nearly died and knows otherwise?Or knows better than doctors about his condition?

Anyway, Haddad do have proposals, they just all suck. What he basically proposes is to do more of the same that PT has been doing these past 16 years, and look where that have lead us.Not to mention all the corruption and how corrupted the party is.That ALONE should make people disregard them.

And just to leave out there:Putting aside the fact that everything that he says is extremely exxagerated,If Bolsonaro were indeed arrested for speaking his mind, and only that, we would be in a dictatorship. Its what you just basically said.

I never said that they dont matter. They do.Of course they do.They are human beings as well, as we all are.Its just that people are trying to create a problem that dosent exist. Its irrelevant if someone loves lesbians, gays, bissexuals and whatnot, as long as he/she respects them and their choices and let them live freely.Thats what Bolsonaro current opinion on them is.At least, thats my take on it.

And when you have a security, educational, or economical proposal, it will be applied to every single citizen in that country, which obviously includes homosexxuals and minorities. After all they are not aliens, they are people too.

No, dude, what the fuck? You're actually saying it's more important for a random celebrity to be tolerant, than the leader of a nation? Look, I don't give a shit about what a movie actor, or a football player, or a popstar says, because it doesn't affect my life. If I enjoy their work and they say something like that, then yeah, it's bitter, but celebrities don't have any tangible influence on people's everyday lives in the way political leaders do. A celebrity being intolerant means they lose their job and everyone despises them. However, a president being intolerant means people feel entitled to the same intolerance, people feel right to do acts of hatred, and in fact they have already begun to do it. In the last few days, a PT supporter was killed in Salvador; a college student was attacked here in Curitiba; a young girl had a swastika stamped on her neck in Porto Alegre. All of these acts and many more happened in the name of Bolsonaro, and even if they're not directy his fault, they are the fault of him being a political figure who condones such actions.

So, no, you're wrong. Stop spewing hate and bullshit.

I couldnt give a flying fuck to someone opinion on a matter as long as that opinion dosent impede me from doing the things I have the right to do.Bolsonaro isnt any of the things you claim him to be, but EVEN if he was, his job is to be a manager, to administrate a country and to resolve its issues. As long as his opinion on a certain topic dosent impede from said topic from being spoked about or being practiced, as long as it is legal, I dont have a problem with it.Much like you dont go around punching people for thinking differently than you even if you think that his opinion is nonsense.
