Regarding the OP's decision:

I largely agree with the OP's concerns.

The PS4 is stagnant, in terms of UI and other features. Sony is riding off the success of their games. (Which may or may not be a reasonable way for them to go, but it is definitely a fact).

The way they treated Vita was really bad. They just dropped it after it became clear that it wasn't going to sell as well as they hoped, leaving many owners with an expensive paper weight.

I don't know anything about the Xperia line, as I'm not a user. I've heard similar complaints elsewhere though.

Sony TVs..... well, they're definitely not a top choice for software features. This doesn't bother me, but I'll confirm that the OP's comment in this regard are accurate.

I don't have any brand loyalty, so I won't be making any big switch of all of my tech devices. As for gaming, I buy all multi-plats, except shooters, on PS4 Pro, because it is the most powerful console I own. If I buy an XBoneX, I'll change that. I buy shooters on XB, because the controller is much better. I also use XB as my main home entertainment device, because I like the TV control features.

With all of that said, I do think MS screwed buyers of XBone in one big way - the removal of the "snap" feature. It was a selling point of the system for me, and they just completely removed it. At first, they hinted that it would be replaced with something similar. But, AFAIK, that replacement never came. So, let's not pretend that MS is immune from criticism.

If this means I do not have to see another one of your god awful "integration" posts on a Playstation thread, than I'm happy.

I'm a Sony guy, but I can really understand the decision.

After about a year to 2 years break in console gaming, I came back to try out some of the latest PS4 exclusives (which have all been pretty great). But what I also noticed is that the OS and PS Store experience remains almost as bad as what it was when the generation started. I cant understand why they are not investing in these areas.

Gaming should remain the focus (and I think Sony mostly has this part down) but they must be on par in other areas as well.

The problem with MS and Xbox is that there is nothing special from a games point of view - Sony has expanded their First Party Lineup so extensively, that its no longer even competitive at this point. Also I cant justify to myself, getting a platform that doesn't have some of the best Single Players games to date - Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Infamous, Spiderman, The Last of Us, Blodborne, Ghost of Tsushima etc. And every year Sony seems to keep expanding, it makes gaming exciting for me.

But i agree with the Sentiment, that Sony should not rely completely on their First Part Lineup - they have the resources and support to expand their other areas as well.

Snip

Some of the responses in this thread are pretty dumb but they come from the usual suspects so I hope you don't take them too seriously. A post like coktoe's above is full of humor (and manly love).

I understand your frustration regarding the amount of missed opportunities on PlayStation (and with Sony in general). We've talked about it before. Sony could indeed tap into a big pool of potential by offering a streamlined and consistent user experience across all of their devices. I don't think a game console will ever outperform a PC when it comes to things such as downloading zips and rars as you mention but I understand your frustration.

Personally, I'm enjoying a PC, PS4, and 3DS (that will be Switched in 2019 with Pokémon) combo. But if you don't have a capable PC, I totally see why you want to play multiplat games on XBO X as it's the strongest console. Additionally, its backwards compatibility and Game Pass are two great features.

The reason why I buy PlayStation (and Nintendo) consoles is because of the games. I have too much fun with their exclusives to not buy their hardware. From what I understand, you'll also continue playing exclusives on PlayStation and then multiplats on Xbox going forward. That's totally understandable. Actually, I don't know why anyone would choose to play multiplat games on PS4 if they owned an XBO X.

We're all just looking for ways to enjoy our favorite entertainment medium and I hope you enjoy yours too.

You're definitely right about PS4 OS, they have left it by the wayside. The latest numbered update, 6.0, only had stability improvements, no new features at all. The latest OS update I got on my XB1 added the new avatar system. And we can't forget all of the features that XB1's OS has already that PS4 lacks, achievement tracker, playtime tracker, etc.

I also agree that Gamepass is a ridiculously good value compared to Sony's comparable streaming service, not only does it cost less, it offers local games instead of laggy cloud games, and it has all 1st party games day 1.

It definitely feels like Sony is getting lazy and overconfident again, just like they did when they let PS2's success go to their head. I worry that they are going to pull a PS3 again when they announce PS5, no crossplay, no backwards compatibility, poor price/performance ratio, a cocky attitude...

It might be a good thing to only have stability updates, as adding features might make the current issue even worse. Although it seems like many people are not worried about the OS experience at the moment. I think the focus for the OS should be ease of use, core functionality, speed, and stability. Once they have that down then they can start looking at expanding the feature set and getting it on par with Xbox/PC. I wouldn't even mind if they targeted all the new functionality for PS5 as long as they get it right.

With regards to Gamepass though, I dont think that will work in Sony's case. They have so many more exclusives, with higher budgets etc. having game pass might literally give them a big loss. MS on the other hand, is way behind on marketshare, with a lower investment in their first party lineup at this point, so it makes sense for them. Personally I wont knock Sony for the lack of Gamepass, id prefer a more extensive lineup than a weaker but cheaper lineup.

I dont think Sony has gotten that bad yet, and I dont see them making big mistakes with the PS5 lunch. But what i do think they need to realize is that they cant simply keep things as is, and expect to dominate. MS, Nintendo and other competitors will be constantly adding features, and innovating to try and compete, which Sony needs to do as well to stay relevant.

Bold: Actually, it's like the PS Store on my PS4 is worse than it was in the beginning of the generation. I don't know what it is. Lack of memory? Sometimes, when I browse the store for 5 minutes it "crashes" and restarts. Also game covers in the store sometimes fail to load. Luckily, I only buy physical games (on console, PC is all digital of course).

So multimedia functions trumps games? Okay then.. Whatever floats your boat.

Really though, just buy a HTPC if your want a PC for the lounge. It will serve you better.

If you hadn't already picked up on it by now, he's very much against wanting to use a PC for nearly anything. He wants consoles to fully replace PC's and handle all their tasks and what not. He's used consoles to pay his bills and what not, while opting as much as possible to use them for daily computing tasks.

Literally the only guy in all the world that forces himself to use a console for what PC's have been doing for decades for daily tasks.

Nothing on this earth will convince him to actually use a PC the way average joe's do.

This comment explains a few things... I guess if that is the case then the X1 has an exclusive feature of being able to do some of those things in the OP, but that is a very strange choice to make to avoid PC's to that degree, it's biting off your nose to spite your face really.

Regarding the "people who disagree with him have ps4's as their console of choice" why just ps4s? My gaming order goes in the line Switch > PC > PS4, I still think his choice is baffling without the information in the above post but I'm gonna guess you got that from him in other threads which were more PC related as per your preferred system. (I just mean, it's not information which is in this thread outside of your post.)

PlayStation has finally drove me away.

For the last 1 1/2 they have completely abandoned PS4. They have stopped supporting any of their services (outside of PlayStation Vue), PSN is down more and more every month, and the OS is getting worse and worse. What the hell are we paying for with PS+?

Microsoft on the other hand has completely revamped the XBO this year. The OS has made massive strides, and is now well ahead of the PS4 OS. They upgraded Edge on XBO, and it now functions almost 1 to 1 with PC (just needs Mouse Support). With that upgrade they brought the ability to download Files, Photos, Music, Videos, Zips, Rars, etc., and they are all accessable right on XBO via the File Explorer and through multiple apps on the Xbox Store.

Their Video store offers 4K HDR content, and just joined Video Anywhere. They are offering Cross Play, which I could care less about, but at least they are not hunkering down in their cave. XBO is gainging more productivity and quality of life apps and features every week.

Then we have B/C, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Game Pass. Game Pass, for $10 a month gives access to all 1st party games with new releases available on day one. It is absolutely ridiculous value.

PlayStation has been my main Computing and Entertainment device since 1998. I have bought played, watched, learned, ran business, and more through PlayStation. I have always bought all of my media, and 3rd party games through Sony, even when things were rough, because Sony always delivered new features, innovation, and continual improvement of the products I purchased. That has changed in the last few years. My Bravia's have incradible Picture Quality, but the OS is the worst I have ever used. PS Vita was dropped, and Xperia's are absolute garbage. Now PlayStation and PlayStation Services are going to trash.

For the first time in 20 years, I am changing my main platform. Microsoft has won me over after 17 years of hard work. They have become open, started listening to consumers, and partners. They are building a Platform, that can continually grow, and reach across the entire spectrum of electronics. They have a vision, and they have been open to the public with where they want to go. This is the company that I want to support. So starting this month my $450 a month entertainment budget is moving to Microsoft.

Perhapps Sony can win me back with PS5, but I am not betting on it. I have watched them piss away potential for to long. At this point I am see them closing themselves off, and killing PlayStation, just like they have every other successful product they have ever made. They will refuse to expand PlayStation's  feature set to offer standard functionallity in todays devices, and people will slowly but surely abandon ship.

Yes, the AAA single player games are great, but the rest is terrible. It will catch up to them.

Releasing Spiderman and GoW in the same year =/= completely abandoning the PS4.

Microsoft Edge is a terrible browser, and nobody should be browsing the internet on a console anyway. Who cares about files, photos, rars, etc? A game console is to play games, not do computer work. Two of the things that make consoles superior to PC are the exclusives, and the no frills OS that gets the hell out of the way and lets you play games. MS has abandoned both, making the XB1 the worst platform to play on. Honestly, aside from the online play, I wish Sony's OS was more like Nintendo's.

Who the heck buys videos from a digital only store?

Gamepass would be a good value, except MS barely has any worthwhile exclusives to speak of. Just Halo MCC, Halo 5, KI, Gears Remaster, Gears 4, and the annual Forza.

Complaining about the lack of crossplay on PS4 is just as silly as complaining that Nintendo will charge you a measly $20 a year to play online, get discounts, and play updated NES titles.

I'll give OP the backwards compatibility, but b/c for PS3 on PS4 is probably not possible. PS5 backwards compatibility is borderline guaranteed at this point. Sony has offered full backwards compatibility on all their consoles, except PS4 due to obvious technical problems. There's no reason to see why they won't go that route with PS5.
