I said the poorest out there. You don't have any idea what the 'poorest' means if you think an individual with a 20k expected income is poor.

Go try the same thing and put 10k expected income instead. Or do 20k with 4 dependents.

20K is about what someone makes with a full time minimum wage job. Depending on the state, some might be more or less. The median income is about $40K.

Yes, and if you work a full time job it has to come with health benefits. The issue comes in to places who refuse to employ people full time to pay for those benefits, so there are lots of people working ~30 hours a week instead of 40 just because the employer doesn't want to pay for their employees to have decent health coverage.

For the people that don't know, you *can* get free health care in America if you are poor. If you aren't poor, then you have to pay. However, many people (myself included) have jobs that include insurance as one of their perks. I can't imagine there are a whole lot of people who actually pay out-of-pocket for their health insurance in America. You really have to look at the big picture. If you live in a country with free health care but a low median income, then the quality of life isn't as great as it might seem.

I'm just happy to live in a country with Universal Healthcare and free market capitalism. It amazes how a nation that did the New Deal could have such issues with this matter.

The America that did the New Deal is dead. Now both political parties are seeking only to increase corporate profits since corporations have flooded politics with legal bribes to do their bidding. FDR would be shouted down as a socialist who isn't pragmatic with only crazy ideas if he were alive today.

You seem to have a terrible understanding of American culture and Americans. But, that's outside the scope of this thread.  So, I'll leave it at that.

I seem to have a much better understanding of American culture than you do. How else would you explain your country being vastly more wealthy and yet having worse conditions for its most fragile citizens than countries with much less of its per capita GDP? It's because Americans shun the idea of helping someone below them. It's always "why do I have to pay for this" or "why do I have to pay for that". And that mindset allows politicians to continue cutting taxes on the wealthy so the rich keep hoarding their wealth and the middle class is happy because those under them now have less support. It's hilarious to see. Nobody in America makes a ruckus about the billions in unneeded corporate subsidies but oh no, if just one person uses their food stamps to buy something not completely nutritious it sparks immediate reform. America is a barbaric state compared to most other nations. It can't even guarantee all of its citizens something as basic as healthcare and instead chooses to have corporations profit off of dying people.

You continue to demonstrate your lack of understanding of Americans and American culture.

You continue to not have any argument whatsoever other than going 'nuh-uh'. It didn't work in primary school and it sure as hell does not work on the internet. If you feel that I misrepresented the case then bring up reasons as to why you think so. Otherwise, you have no case and you surely haven't countered my argument one iota. Do Americans not know how to have a proper argument either?

Much of these people should qualify for low cost healthcare.gov options. Unless they have great paying part time jobs, which I doubt. This is also why a healthy job market is important, people benefit when companies compete for employs.

Some companies also have modest pay but offer good benefits.

Now take 30 hours and multiply it by the minimum wage and you'll get around ~10k annually. And in states like Texas that do not expand Medicaid such a person gets zero subsidies. That's the issue. In states that do expand Medicaid there is no problem because Medicaid will cover those people. It's only primarily Republican states who only want poor people to suffer that have that problem. And the hilarious thing is, it's fiscally irresponsible since Medicaid is so much cheaper than the alternative, which is county taxpayers paying for all the emergency room visit by the uninsured. So I'm pretty sure it's only out of spite rather than any fiscal rational that this coverage gap exists.

Well it doesn't help when the government is already pouring a endless stream of money into many social services. Even before reaching some sort of public healthcare option there is always some new social program being proposed, like universal basic income.

Looks like a tiny percent of Texas actually makes minimum wage. I'm not surprised because its hard to fine good employees at $7.25. That's the thing about the minimum wage, very few jobs offer that because good employees tend to leave. But $13K is not an unreasonable bar as an incentive for a huge healthcare subsidy.

On a side note, I'm not suggesting the way healthcare in the US is done is logical or ideal. Frankly, I'd like to see a lot of things reformed but parties aren't working for a middle ground. For the most part though, healthcare in the US does work. The media just puts a spotlight and exaggerates those who fall in the cracks of the system.
