Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's Jim Ryan on old Gran Turismo Games: "Why would anybody play this?"

It sure didn't stop Sony from making PS3 BC with all of their previous consoles. Shame he has such a hostile attitude, I would sure love to play some PS1 Classics on my PS4.

Ps1 classics, yes. Gran Turismo 1+2? God no.

He's right. Very few people would actually bother (re)playing them.

His actual comment was in relation to gran turismo 1 and 2. He never said all games. Terrible click bait headline.

Personally I'm hoping the ps5 will be powerful enough to brute force emulate ps3 games. And being compatible with the entire ps4 library should be straight forward.

Sony made a lot of improvements this gen. Next gen I think backwards compatible will be their next improvement and it will help then gain even more market over xbox.

To be fair, I pulled the title from the original Neogaf post, didn't create it myself. He does indeed seem to be only referring to Gran Turismo with his statement, but the fact that he used it in the same paragraph as a general backwards compatibility statement was a mistake on his part if he didn't intend to label all backwards compatibility that way.

I seen it on gaf and knew it wasn't your fault.  Not sure if it's gaf created or from the article headline but either way it's clickbait.

You should change your headline to this if you're infact genuine.

Sony's Jim Ryan on Gran Turismo 1&2: "Why would anybody play this?"

Why would anybody pay for the PSN PS2 games Sony has for sale then? Should they be free or PS Now even.

Nice to know Sony executives think their own back-catalogue is garbage.

Yup. That is exactly what is going on here. You should become a writer for clickbait websites/magazines.

Sure, if we were all graphics whores. I mean.. have a pretty okay PC that I still play old games on, and with some tinkering around.. I can get them running on the new system.

Which kinda irks me that Sony hasn't really put any effort in emulation this generation. There's a few games that I would like to play on the PS3 that I can't on the PS4.. And its the old stuff like the PSOne classics that should really be on the PS4. PS2 BC would be a nice as well, but not necessary. But yeah, BC would benefit older games in terms of look/gameplay due to the extra power from the new consoles.

Here's hoping the PS5 will at support BC with the PS3 as well as the PS4.

I edited the title to make it less controversial.

That's technically accurate, but I'd bet Ryan was using the Gran Turismo event as an example for a belief that 5th and 6th gen games are unplayable due to inferior graphics. It would be strange for him to think such a rule applied only to a single franchise or genre.

Misleading title, reference was to specific games.

He's trying to spin an excuse here, certainly, but he's also probably right in that very few people care about backwards compatibility. Xbox only went with it as an attempt to win gamers back to Xbox by saying, "see, we DO care about you!"

I feel pretty comfortable in saying that the majority of people buying new home consoles see it as a very minor factor.

Personally, I don't care. I still have my PS2 hooked up and I've only gone back to play it a handful of times and each time I gave up on a title after one play-through. Most games don't hold up to the nostalgia I have for them. About the only games I would have an interest in replaying are turn-based, which doesn't age as poorly.

So, yeah, if a new console has a different architecture which would make backwards compatibility difficult or more expensive, then I have no problem with it being left off.

Judging by the quote, is sounds like he was referencing old games in general, not just Gran Turismo games. But I have trouble loading the site with more context, so I can't make proper judgement.

Anyway, there should be little reason for anyone to play old GT games, I imagine. I haven't played them, but I can't imagine them having many advantages over the newer games in the series.

Dude has a point, when u see a sim racer like GT on PS1 and PS2, they're ancient, why would u play this? But many other games with better art styles, like FFIX or XII do still hold up and he would rethink his words if he saw them.

BC is something that was needed going from SD to HD TVs around 2006, but since PS3 is also HD, BC is unneeded with PS4. My PS3 is still hooked up, that console was getting major games until recently.

PS5 will likely have PS4 BC due to the architecture they'll go with from now on, it'll probably have something like a "boost mode" that bruteforces BC, but something that's not guaranteed to work 100%.

"When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much," says Ryan. "That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"
