Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Now that Yooka Laylee is essentially a critical failure... this is good time for Banjo Three!

They are where they belong. Microsoft wouldn't let them be who they need to be. Same reason bungie left them. Microsoft is like activision or EA, in that they will get you working for them and focus on one of their franchises forever. There is no growth. The game wasn't bad enough to where they need to go back. I'd be curious about a relationship with Nintendo though based on their development process. Dont get me wrong, because  Ori is great. Its this generations great 2D platformer though.

Is anybody suggesting Playtonic should be apart of MS?

MS has worked with numerous 3rd party studios for a single project.

Is Banjo Kazooie really that great?? When I played it, granted I was a child, but it honestly wasn't that fun... I liked the atmosphere of it but I thought it was kinda boring

Banjo-Kazooie is the better version of Super Mario 64, it uses the same engine and is better in every aspect. It has the best textures, music and graphics on the N64. The atmosphere and secret filled hub world were unrivaled at it's time, it was pure gaming perfection and set the new standard. Games like this did not exist on any other platform, especially since it is not action or shooting focused.

However, I did not like Banjo-Tooie, because of the bad textures and oversized worlds. All the atmosphere was lost and the game got boring because of the low content density and long walking distances. I tried several times but never got into this game. There was also way too many stuff to collect and perform, it just was not fun anymore.

But the first game and DK64 did it right.

Wow I thought the game wasn't coming out for a fair while. The marketing has been extremely shitty, I heard a lot about this game a while back but nothing much in recent times other than it was still in development.

Going MS exclusive will be a big step back for them. I think they will continue to push new IP but with backing of a punlisher like Ea/Ubisoft. Maybe MS coukd sell the Banjo property

I played it a few years and loved it. Great tone, great characters, clever level design, challenging platform puzzles and the collection mechanics that are a good incentive to explore and also kind of relaxing IMO. I would describe the Game as engaging as oppose to fun

This is exactly how I felt about Tooie.

Just checked the scores and yea, it is pretty shit for all the hype its been getting. Other than Shovel Knight I can't name another amazing game from Kickstarter.

Thimbleweed Park, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, Undertale, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2, Grim Dawn, FTL, The Banner Saga, Superhot...

Well 3rd parties often just go where the funding is.

Where do they go now? Is Yooka Layee making them a fortune? Are publishers lining up to fund another project? Can they get big funding from a Kickstarter again?

If their options are limited then working with MS on a Banjo game is probably a good move.

You're right that Microsoft has worked with numerous third party but it seems like thats all they feel comfortable doing. Much like last gen the well will run dry. They need to build up their first party because towards the middle and end, third party usually want to work on their own IP's  for multiplat platforms unless they are under second party contract. This is very same reason why Microsoft had to buy Gears from Epic. Epic no longer wanted to work on that and focus on newer games. Microsoft wanted to focus on the same thing. It gets tiring and repetitive and does not endorse creativity. Again...same reason bungie left them.
