Forums - Gaming Discussion - Titanfall 2 Designer: Switch Is So Underpowered Third Party Support Will Be No Different Than Wii U

No idea why they would think that. in terms of AAA 3rd party titles the Wii U is currently way ahead of the Switch.

The main difference here is that Wii U support dried up after the 1st year while Switch support is increasing with no signs of slowing down.

It's never going to get anywhere near PS4 or even xbox support at this rate though. It's impossible because its not powerful enough to get the big games like battlefield V or RDR2 etc.

Does that have anything to do with what I said?

Wow, what a list!

1. A good chunk of that list is Japanese games. Frankly, they don't make a lot of cutting edge games and that's partly why their content scales well to Switch. Switch is also a popular platform in Japan so they will cater to that audience.

2. You started with the most impressive ports, Doom and Wolfenstein. That engine was built to scale well and even hit 60 fps on 8th gen consoles. So again, partly why scales to Switch well.

3. You list towards the second half starts to fall apart because those are not by any means AAA games and some aren't even technically impressive for the hardware.

4. The Switch is naturally gonna get better support than the Switch Wii U of the larger userbase. But studios clearly aren't that motivated to bring their AAA experiences to Switch. Frankly, a game like Soul Calibur VI should have worked on Switch, but evidently it wasn't worth the effort Namco.

This entire argument is completely baseless considering that his direct quote only says "third parties", not technically impressive, non-Japanese or AAA ones.

"They’ve been so underpowered [in terms of hardware] that they don’t have the support of third parties because they’re all making games for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. And the Nintendo Switch is no different."

He was saying the Wii U was so underpowered that it missed out on third parties. Well.. maybe the guy was just flat out wrong in his assessment that you need power to get third parties. Switch is obviously underpowered compared to the PS4 and XBO but that hasn't stopped it from getting far more relevant support of third parties than the Wii U ever did, even barring independent devs. Sometimes devs are just plain wrong, they don't need you doing damage control for their misguided statements.

Uhm... that's the point. Its underpowered so its gonna miss out on games. That's exactly what's happening. The support its getting plenty of are less technically demanding games. You think that's a coincidence?

Here's the thing, Switch fans are making a different argument than what was actually intended. We all knew Switch was gonna get support of less technically demanding games and some major games would be scaled back for Switch, that happened for 7th gen consoles as well. However, even I'm surprised by how little support of major titles Switch is getting even though Switch has strong sales and supports the engines.

In March the Switch will be 2 years old, so in about 5 months. I think the userbase will be over 30 million. However, the list of upcoming games for Switch has very few major releases. Especially with the holiday coming, its kinda bizarre. Selling great, but not well supported for major releases. At the very least it would be nice if it had more 7th gen ports like Skyrim and Diablo III. Because the Switch can easily handle 7th gen era games and make improvements.

I think as shown, a lot of these current and upcoming games have been in development before either third party devs had available dev kits or before third party developers realized how successful the Switch would eventually become. Games like Soul Calibur VI could potentially come to Switch due to it running on UE4, but the game was already in development prior to the Switch being a thing. Even Dragon Ball FighterZ came late, even though the time frame between the Xbone and PS4 releases compared to the Switch's release was actually not too bad in all consideration. Same with Crash N' Sane Trilogy and even Okami HD. I guess the more puzzling release was Dark Souls Remastered as it was released late on Switch for some reason..

power, power, power, power, power, power, power, power, power, power.

Power is more important than imagination, and the result is Titanfall 2. Bravo

But Titanfall 2 is actually one of best shooter campaigns we've seen this gen. Partly because its a unique experience.

However, the hardware of Switch was underestimated. The Switch likely could handle this game. Albeit with scaled back visuals and half the frame rate.

We are too far in for those excuses. The Switch was a hit at launch and a port doesn't take a year or years to develop. I mean Blizzard said they spent 9 months developing Diablo III and I anticipate a very polished port, so that would take extra time vs a simple port job.

I suspect Dark Souls was late to avoid a poorly optimized port job like LA Noire, WWE 2Kwhatever, and Payday 2. These ports are scaled back from the more demanding 8th gen remasters. Dark Souls was handled by a another studio and very well optimized for the hardware. Meanwhile the other ports I mentioned... less impressive and less optimized.

If there were major titles in development for Switch, I imagine there would have been some announcements. I mean we have no idea when Doom Eternal is releasing, but it was at least confirmed for Switch.

It is what it is I guess. I'm not trying excuse third party developers nor Nintendo on this. Unfortunately, we don't know when or if some of these games were/are being considered for Switch.

Again, Dragon Ball FigherZ show that a relatively quick (6-9 months) port can be done. Though we also have examples like DQXI that apparently will take some time before the Switch version can release.

Seems like he wasn't really wrong. Ambitious AAA games won't release on Switch, other games are potential candidates.
