Forums - Nintendo Discussion - GameStop Switch pre-order numbers

I think the switch will be OK, it may sell like 30m, Wii U die so fast because Nintendo... After launch we got nothing! for a couple of months. The switch while it doesn't have a lot of games at launch, it has a Zelda game, 2 months later MK8 Deluxe, and 2 months after Splatoon 2(which a lot of people like) Holiday 3D Mario and probably XC2 and whatever gets throw in this year(Pikmin 4?) It has the tools to survie this year with great sales, to me the real test will be 2018 to refresh the sales? my money is on Smash.

Has any system sold badly during the first 2 weeks and first 4 first weeks of launch? I'm asking out of curiosity.

I'm thinking the 2mm number is just PR put out to ensure that they exceed the fake expectations.

There is absolutely no way that Gamestop would get 25% of the world's supply, unless Nintendo has allotted 75% of it to the US. I can say that with confidence because Walmart exists, and would sink Nintendo if they were sold out, but other retailers got a larger share of the US pie.

Amazon too.

The reality of retail in the USA is that Walmart and Amazon get whatever they want.  There just isn't any chance that they would allow Nintendo to send 500k to Gamestop, and say 100k to each of them.  They would tell Nintendo that they won't carry games, or stop selling 3DS, or whatever, and force Ninty to cut them in for a bigger slice.  Nobody can afford to piss off Walmart of Amazon.

Pent up demand from people wanting something that isn't the Wii U, first 6-8 weeks should be massive. This is why I don't understand those who think it'll sell only a few million for the entire CY. First shipment will disappear right away, the real question is what happens after the dust has settled and slow season sets in, that's the real test.

Well, the Wii U only had a good month: launch. By Dec 2012 was already in alarming numbers, so I think we may have a better pic of the situation for the Switch at April 2017.

Well launch numbers should be good as usual.  Then we have Mario Kart the month after.  Numbers should stay respectable.

The first challenge will be the baseline until splatoon.  Then after an expected boost what kind of numbers will it do for the rest of the year will be the most telling.

2 million WW if divided up evenly works out to

670k a piece for the three major regions (Americas, Japan/Asia, Europe/Aus).

That's not a lot of systems.

Pretty good, there is a deposit fee so it would make people think twice before cancelling, so there's that

If Nintendo plays this right, by releasing in March they will sell a ton early on, and then if they pull a wii and have shortages everywhere, increasing demand and keep that going all the way until holidays 2017, then bam they make amazing bundles and deals. They may not even go through a slow down period until the beginning of 2018 if they manage that.

If Nintendo has immense demand they better not fabricate shortages..... Because they are going up against a prime ps4 system with the best line up since ps2s prime...... People would get a ps4 instead for the same price and more games..... If they have an option imo
