Forums - Politics Discussion - Why Japan is on the decline

Aging population, almost zero immigration, very low sex life, women are a lot more career focused.

Nevermind I can't wait for somebody else.

WTF are you talking about OP? In a time span of 9 years (2007 - 2016) Japanese dedicated gaming sales decreased by 50%. In the same time frame population remained stable. Birth rates decreased very slightly and average age increased very slightly.

And now you go around proclaiming these slight single percentage changes in demographics cause a 50% drop?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Saying that people in Japan don't have income to buy consoles is ridiculous. I imagine that if it was getting hard to buy one in Japan, it would be impossible in Latin America, East Europe, etc.

Moved to politics.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Right now I am far more concerned about the West. These same problems are ahead for us.

At least a strong anti immigration policy is saving them from the far right storm brewing over the west. Come the end of 2017 I might just migrate to Japan. Let's wait see.

Even when they have vacation days, they don't use it. The Japanese government created quite a lot of national holidays to push people to stop working and spending more money.

And from what I've seen, condoms really are the last reason for the low birthrate...

Because in some businesses, it really is a faux pas to use up more then 8 vacation days. The government has been patching a broken system instead of tackling the system.

The governnment did not even really tried to patch it. They could just made vacation mandatory or paid if not taken, and that would be the end of the problem.

Japan law give 4 weeks of vacation for a full time employee, and my company contract is 5 weeks, one extra bonus weeks ! But I'm lucky if I can take 2 weeks, I have to fight for it and it costs me in term of reputation/relationship at work. Most of my colleagues only take 1 week. Other problems are education cost, appartment size, inexisting state aid, and for some low pay. Life is hard for a family in Japan, that's a fact.

Indeed, and why would a lot of Japanese raise a family if they hardly have time for themselves?

This was one of the points Iwata made why DS and Wii were made in the first place; to expand the audience in a declining population. You remove barriers between the player and the game (more intuitive controls) and make games to appeal outside the younger, more traditional, gaming audience.

Besides the point vivster makes, that the demographics change much slower than the size of the industry - do you really present a projection 100 years into the future? Wow. If we assume every 20 years the children before have childs themself you look at the grandgrandgrandgrandchildren of todays children that are included in the statistics. Add to that uncertanty about migration that can change the demographics - and a 100 year projection is pretty much bullshit.

It's really hard to change something like that, because the people to for your election campaign are going to be against it anyway.

I read a couple of years ago, that Japan has high divorce rate at retirement age, that would be caused by the time the Japanese spend time at work and therefore poeple don't know their partners - until they retire, spend time and get to know each other to notice they really don't like each other.
