The governnment did not even really tried to patch it. They could just made vacation mandatory or paid if not taken, and that would be the end of the problem.

Japan law give 4 weeks of vacation for a full time employee, and my company contract is 5 weeks, one extra bonus weeks ! But I'm lucky if I can take 2 weeks, I have to fight for it and it costs me in term of reputation/relationship at work. Most of my colleagues only take 1 week. Other problems are education cost, appartment size, inexisting state aid, and for some low pay. Life is hard for a family in Japan, that's a fact.

Indeed, and why would a lot of Japanese raise a family if they hardly have time for themselves?

It's really hard to change something like that, because the people to for your election campaign are going to be against it anyway.

I read a couple of years ago, that Japan has high divorce rate at retirement age, that would be caused by the time the Japanese spend time at work and therefore poeple don't know their partners - until they retire, spend time and get to know each other to notice they really don't like each other.
