Forums - Movies & TV - Suicide Squad: 750 - 800 Million needed to break even?

The estimated budget is roughly $175-$200 million. Why does it need to gross 4x its budget in order to break even?

Because that number doesn't include its marketing budget which is probably close to $200 million also.

It'll make a profit from digital video/home video. I think it could get to $750M without China.

Agreed, Batman Vs Superman didn't make a ton of money in China ($95 million) so it not playing in China its not going to hurt its box office too much.  Even if it would have played in China I think it would have made a lot less money then Batman Vs Superman made there around $50 million tops.

Just after a shit like BvS they release just another turd... and here I was thinking this could be fun lol Never trust DC movies I guess.

Is pretty sad when you see this amount of money being wasted in such bad projects. I don't think this is gonna break those numbers.

Gross refers to gross earnings in U.S. dollars. On average, the movie's distributor receives a little more than half of the final gross (often referred to as the "rentals") with the remainder going to the exhibitor (i.e., movie theater). The money split varies from movie to movie, but, generally, the contract favors the distributor in early weeks and shifts to the exhibitor later on.

Production Budget refers to the cost to make the movie and it does not include marketing or other expenditures.

Mismanagement of resources (Not even relating to production) can make a movie go up dramatically.

Apparently the movie had reshoots. Would all that be included in the production budget?

Apparantly that is factored.

It'd reached 700 easily had China cleared the release there. It sucks.

but isn't the budget 175 million? 340 to break even off the budget.

How much are you saying the marketing is? No way it is as much as BvS 250 million.

Everyone here is a little askew of how the numbers work.

Yes, the Production budget was reported at $175 million.  The advertising for tentpoles is usually $150-200 million WORLD WIDE.

So, the confusion comes from the stated 50% of the gross(during its first few weeks and it goes down from there).  That only refers to the US, not the rest of the world.  Outside of the US, the studio usually only gets 20-30% of the gross.  I recommend everyone going to boxofficemojo.com and looking at a films total.  It breaks down the US and international sales.  So, if SS does about 250 million in the US, the studio only gets about $125 million of that.  If it does 500 million outside of the US, the studio might only see $150 million of that. That would total about $275-300 million for the studio against $350-375 million cost.

That's why they think it needs $800 million to break even...

It is near the end of the end....

800M to break even? Yeah, right. To be considered a success, maybe. Even then that sounds far fetched.

suicide squad is killing every other movies legs

Female audience giving A- and younger ones giving A in the cinemascore aggregate is a huge positive sign. This one will have legs indeed.

Alice Through the Looking Glass has a Cinemascore of A-, X-Men Apocalpyse a A-, Ghosbusters has a B+ (same score as Suicide Squad).

Those Cinemascore's seem awfully generous to be honest, seems like your movie would have to be literally grass growing on a screen for 2 hours to get a C score.

Holy $#!%... this movie is estimated to have done $65+ million on Friday ALONE so far...

That's pretty damn impressive, I had no idea this movie was that highly anticipated, even in the face of all the negative reviews.

Also, I find it hard to believe that this movie needs 750m-800m just to break even.  You'd think its break even point would be in the $500m range, with an estimated $175m budget.  You're telling me that the studio spent over half a billion marketing this thing??

That's Friday plus the $20m+ it got on it's Thursday previews. Opening day numbers ALWAYS include preview numbers(if the film had an early screening the day before).
