They said, I believe, that now that Maker is out they are going to make changes to the series going forward. So, in the traditional sense yes it will be the last I think, but it depends on what these changes they say they are going to make will be.

I think there will be end, or at least a break to the "New Super Mario Bros" series, but i don't think it will be due to Mario Maker. It may be just because the series isn't 'new' anymore, and they have done enough with the series to at least take a break and expand further on Mario games. We may see more games like it if and when people start to miss that simple feel of Mario again. So yeah, yes and no..?
Dance my pretties!

My thinking is that future 2D Mario titles will have a main set of levels that comprise the 'main' game, with Mario Maker tools as an equally-important half of the product. Frankly, like LittleBigPlanet does.
New Super Mario series can take a holiday - but it is not the end of it!
Switch!!!
Yes because after the Wii U they'll start the "Next Super Mario" series
Super Mario maker isn't even part of the "New Super Mario" seies.
No. New Super Mario Bros U has elements and level design impossible to recreate in SMM. Actually, SMB3 and SMW too.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile
The only problem NSMB is going to have in terms of a new game is competing with Mario Maker and Pikmin for developer resources. Even if they're not huge system sellers, NSMB titles sell too much to simply not make. I figure that if the NX is a hybrid like suspected, NSMB3 will be released during its second year, with the 2D Mario team making levels for it even while working on a new Mario Maker of Pikmin 3. The newly created NSMB2 team was taught level design for a reason.
Love and tolerate.

Thats my issue with the Wii U mario games. sidescroller 1&2, SMM (sidescroller level designer), and a 3D game that tries to pay homage to its old roots, of a 2D sidescroller.
It feels like something is missing. NX needs a really good 3D mario game like mario 64, sunshine, galaxy. so my "i really hope so" just means I hope they dont release another f***ing 2D sidescroller, before they give us a really good 3D mario game again. |
3D World is above 64 ( plagued by camera and control issues), Sunshine (an overall average game) and Galaxy 2 ( didn't offer anything too grea which wasn't present in the first game). It's all my opinion of course.

This.
