Starbound 1.2  - Vault Update

Heya, it's been awhile since the last post on Starbound, but now there's a new update to the game, which adds more content to the post-game.

New features include:

Ancient Vault

    • Players who have completed the main storyline can visit a mysterious trader on the Outpost who will send them on a quest to activate and enter the Ancient Gateways found floating in some systems

    • These gateways provide access to Ancient Vaults: challenging procedural dungeons left by the ancients, filled with dangerous guardians (including procedural bosses!) and fantastic lost technologies

Terraforming

    • Using powerful devices acquired from the Ancient Vaults along with a new Essence currency, you can now transform regions or whole planets into entirely different biomes

    • Terraformers can be used to expand a region across a planet’s surface, replacing natural blocks, objects and plant life, and eventually changing the type of the planet itself

    • Microformers are consumable single-use terraformers which provide even more region types to add to your worlds

Weapon Upgrades

    • Use the ancient anvil available at the end of Ancient Vaults and spend Essence to upgrade your outdated legendary weapons, opening up many new options for endgame combat styles

Elemental Damage

    • Monsters now have resistance and weakness to elemental damage types, making your choice of weapons more important than ever

Holiday Spirit

    • Celebrate the holidays with the variety of festive items bought from Space Santa at the Outpost!

What Is Starbound?

Starbound is a 2D space acion adventure sandbox game similar to Minecraft and Terraria, feature crafting, combat, and exploration. Create a character from a range of 7 races and set off into the stars. With your home planet lost, it's your task to gather resources to survive, explore various planets, and solve the mystery behind the destruction of your planet, while finding and restoring your life somewhere in the vast universe. Go at it alone, or with a group of friends, the infinite universe awaits you.

Choose a race. You have 7 to choose from~

Board your ship.

Explore a planet.

Gather resources. (You know... for survivial and stuff...)

Explore other various planets. (All those shines have planets to explore!)

Discover various biomes. (I didn't sign up for this!)

Take a break and cook some food (Cuz... food is pretty important xD )

Discover mysterious structures. (What's this anchor do...?)

Speak with various other lifeforms (Hey there frog man :D )

Find treasure. (Finders keepers!)

Upgrade your gear. (No, don't stare Dx )

Take and complete quests (Surprise! There's no exp in this game! Joke's on you!)

Find crew members to join you (Hello Yanny the Yanitor~ )

Build a crew. (Meet the Runaway Brides!)

Upgrade your ship (They are professional penguins)

Get even more crew members. (Yay, more brides!)

Build a home. (Just a modest home...)

Start a garden (...on a winter planet. Totally makes sense!)

Build homes for tenants (featuring: The Monopoly guy~)

Capture monsters and become a pokemon master

And much more...

If you want to see a trailer, here's one. Fair warning: I think it spoils a bit too much on the game...

Me and Chazore decided to team up on this thread idea, since we're both Starbound fans. He'll be participating in this as well, helping me cover anything and everything SB, getting pictures, and setting up playtimes with other people :D

Those are the mods I'm currently sporting atm and give me that nice blend of the current game plus parts from the beta days that aren't with the current version of the game. Anyone who is on my friend list on Steam can easily see what mods I've favourited, just in case anyone wants to know what I'm using/will use.

The game has had mod support since it entered early access back in Dec 2013, today mod support is still as strong as ever with new mods coming out every few days.

Two mods alone today that I'll be looking into:

Time control Tech: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=740266309

Weapon fusion station: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=741491949

Kemono Race: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=739437569

Gardenbot2 : Reboot Edition (build your own bots that can mine areas for you, take care of your own crops and farm them etc):

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=729428280

Explorerpod (your own racial vehicle to use, despite the game allowing for other vehicles already):

Disabled drop for Survival Mode (you won't drop items in survival mode with this mod for those that don't want to drop items and pick them up again after death):

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=729746228

Also I was going to do this with the original idea i had for the thread:

I'll be dishing out 3 copies of the game to 3 people who post for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots. Remember that you have to have a Steam account in order for me to gift it to you. Don't forget to list your Steam name.

Just discovered that facerig have added Starbound 3D avatars to download for use:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/321700/

Facerig on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/274920/

"FaceRig is a program that aims to enable anyone with a webcam to digitally embody awesome characters. The output can be recorded as a movie or streamed to Skype, Twitch, Hangouts or any service that traditionally uses a webcam in real time."

You can basically use Facerig to use a 3D avatar that tracks your visual facial expressions via your webcam, you can play your games like Starbound while using FR to appear to people without showing your actual face (for those that want to use the custom avatars).
