Forums - Gaming Discussion - What's wrong with being a fanboy?

I tend to find people who use the word "fanboy" to describe others far more annoying than those being called "fanboys".

Around the Network

On an individual to individual basis, absolutely nothing.

I'm an xbox fanboy because Xbox was my first console, and I only have time/ money to primarily buy games on one system, end of story.

However, unfortunately, fanboy culture has overtaken the media / journalism industry. Just take a lot at how ridiculously inflated reviews for Apple devices are compared to MicrosoftS, HTC, Nexus etc.

Its even worse on the movie and videogames front. Just look at how many blind 10/10 scores MSG5 got. Fueled with nothing but fanboyism.

The fanboy culture and overhype culture is whats really putting me off popculture at the moment.

I have zero interest was watch movies when they release in the cinema and rather wait for hype to die down and form my own opinion, you know cause fanboy opinions/propaganda is contagious as fuck.... and that brings me on to the next issue... social media... but thats for another thread I guess.

Fanboys are fun and it's fun having discussions with them. Trolls are even better. This forum would be so boring without them. If you can't handle fanboys, then I feel bad for your momma. Must be expensive having to buy all those diapers, you baby... 👶 😃

You could say I'm a Sony fanboy I enjoy a lot of what they do and stick by them through dark spells. (Not without critique) if Sony do something dumb I'm aboard the hatewagon but it's out of love.. Honest.

Fucking Wonderbook.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

The thing is tho, there isn't very much wrong in the slightest with someone branding themselves a fanboy of a certain thing,

Lets give an example of if there being a person who loves Sony in general but they do something a bit odd sounding or just down right baffling to most

1 - The person who was a huge fan of Sony could say something along the lines of "Man this seems like a bit of an odd move but I'm a Sony fanboy so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and see what they plan to do in the long run with it." which is perfectly fine, it explains why the person is accepting of the strange stance/idea because they are a fan of the company.

But what happens here sometimes and is what is completely and utterly wrong is when someone else uses the label to dismiss an argument or idea.

2 - The person who is a huge fan of Sony says the same "Man, this seems like and odd idea but I'm going to see what they plan to do and how it works out before I judge this to be a stupid move" which is then followed by someone elses reply of "well you would think that about this, you are just a big Sony fanboy"

Instance 1 in my book is completely perfect, it's someone who is openly saying they like the company and give them more leeway based on their past actions, Number 2 not tho, it is someone saying that they dislike a posters opinion based on their past posts and views, that doesn't allow a poster to ever try to sway over anyone else if you always look down on their views and dismiss them based on you thinking that they like the company behind the idea so their idea can't hold weight.

Man.... that got longer and ranty'r than I'd have liked!

A fanboy is a passionate fan and that's ok.

But people missuse the word and give it this meaning: "A "fanboy" is someone who defends a certain brand without logic or reason". And that's wrong!

That's not a fanboy, that's an idiot.

There is nothing wrong with being a fanboy. Just do not let that totally cloud your judgment and screw with fans of other systems.

I am primarily a Sony/Playstation fan (85% of my gaming done on PS3/4)

Agreed. I am whole heartedly a Sony pony fan boy but I also like games so I own all console brands. I don't think being a fan boy can only be negative. I am also somewhat of a sega fan boy too for nostalgia...... Pre dreamcast demise. Would I call Xbox or Nintendo junk? Nope. I guess im a console fan boy in general because I tried pc gaming and don't care for it.

10% of the leftover is PC and 5% is Nintendo lol

When people wonder why the mass populace doesn't take computer games seriously, I point to the word fanboy, and the fact that that word is still actually an accepted term in game discussion.

"Fanboy" is literally a word created solely to cheaply insult. It has no substance and no positive connotations what-so-ever. It's childish, petty name calling. That word belongs in elementary school playgrounds, not in intelligent video game discussion.

Instead of making threads attempting to condone and unproductively justify the use of such a regressive word, we should be making threads and writing articles on why the word should be completely eliminated from the gaming vernacular.

I want to repost this for emphasis, because it genuinely disappoints me that I seem to be the only person here who takes issue with the use of the word itself.

When you're labeled as a fanboy, it's hard to take any of your posts seriously. The term has quite a negative connotation, usually meaning someone a fan of something to the point of defending and praising a particular brand, even when they make bad mistakes. Also, they tend to strongly dislike competition, doing the opposite with them. So yeah, being labeled a fanboy is a terrible thing.

Gamer: "I'm looking forward to the new game in my favorite series."

Regular person: "if that's what you're into, that's fine. "

Fanboy: "That series sucks, the console sucks, they only make one series every year, it's not in 1080p, and you're gay for liking what I don't like.".

*Then, actively goes looking for bad news about said game to further make the game look like shit.*

That basically sums it up. There's alot of that around here too.
