Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What was the point of the "New" 3DS?

That's always been the case in portable gaming.  durning the Gameboy days, consoles like the Lynx, TurboXpress, etc were coming out sometimes with the ability to play full console games--not ports-- the ACTUAL games.  The cheap ass GB was killing em all. I think Nintendo just realized what mobile gaming discovered: people will settle for less when it comes to portable gaming.

It's not so much settling for less, but valuing more practical concerns. For example, the Lynx and TurboXpress may have been more technologically advanced, but they were also far more expensive, much less durable, and the comparable battery life was garbage. All of these are tremondous concerns for an object which is meant to be portable.

Mid to end of cycle refresh basically.

There was nothing about the New 3DS that should have convinced existing 3DS owners to "upgrade" and I could be mistaken here since I no longer track the 3DS, but if Nintendo is currently marketing the 2DS as their budget model and the New 3DS XL as their NA market flagship portable, they should be able to stop producing the original 3DS and 3DS XL.

Considering the Dolphin version of Xenoblade Chronicles is so far superior to the N3DS one, which isn't really much of an upgrade over the Wii one, I fail to see any reason to upgrade as well. Not that I own a 3DS in the first place, but still I've got to agree

Nintendo rising the price with the N3DS though is the kicker for me. Really, raising the price of an old, dying console that was outdated tech the moment it hit the market? Gotta be Nintendo!

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

It served to "refresh" the 3DS in a way, even if it wasn't really necessary.

The improvement wasn't as big as, say, the DS to DSi was. The extra control inputs are appreciated (Albeit not handled in a very elegant manner) and the slight CPU power increase is somewhat pointless. I doubt we'll see very many New3DS exclusive titles, since Nintendo would be alienating a large portion of their market base. So it benefits Nintendo more than anyone else, really.

Personally, I don't see a reason to own a New3DS, unless Rune Factory 5 gets confirmed as a New3DS exclusive (Which won't happen, because RIP Neverland :'( 1993-2013) I think I'll be just fine with my standard version.

The only upgraded Nintendo handheld I ever bought was the GBA SP and that was because it finally had a backlight. Other than that, I think it's a total waste of money.

Still, if you consider the price of both the console and games later on, Vita ends up being much, much cheaper! And it's despite having a much higher level of built quality, next gen specs (in comparison) and games costing more to develop. I am willing to pay for quality, but I won't pay extra for lower quality. I know there are some great games there, but I can't justify the price of the 3DS experience. As I've said - I'll get one when they crack it like they did with the DS. I still ended up buying a few DS games I enjoyed the most and will do that with 3DS as well, but no way I'm getting into this system without that.

Are the games so much better on the Vita that you wouldn't wait for it to be hacked before buying it?

And on a portable, are Vita graphics so much more important than 3DS graphics? You're on the go, typically graphics are secondary, and 3DS allows good enough visuals for games like Bravely Default and Fire Emblem. It all depends on how much effort the devs wants to put in.

I'm asking but I realize that everyone has their preferences.

Graphics aren't that important, but having PSP level graphics in 2015 is unacceptable and should be. Nintendo fans should demand better from a company that makes such huge profits on handhelds.

DS, DS Lite, DS XL, DSi

It's just the Nintendo way.

i just have to wonder why this just wasnt the original 3ds in the first place, but Nintendo gonna Nintendo?

Wasn't stable 3D part of the new 3DS? Or have I missed something because that sounds like a pretty big thing.

The answer is the same as asking why the PS4 wasn't the PS3 or the PS2, because it hadn't been developed yet.
