Mid to end of cycle refresh basically.
There was nothing about the New 3DS that should have convinced existing 3DS owners to "upgrade" and I could be mistaken here since I no longer track the 3DS, but if Nintendo is currently marketing the 2DS as their budget model and the New 3DS XL as their NA market flagship portable, they should be able to stop producing the original 3DS and 3DS XL.
