Apparently Sakurai hates DLCs these days as much as most gamers do!

His thoughts on DLCs nowadays:

These days, the “DLC scam” has become quite the epidemic, charging customers extra money to complete what was essentially an unfinished product. I completely understand how aggravated players must feel. After all, a game should be 100% at the time of release, and I would be livid if it were split up and sold in pieces.

Why, then, do you think so many titles provide premium DLC on or shortly following a game’s release? It’s because that’s the easiest way to make money.

After all, if you wait too long after a game’s release to distribute additional content, players will already move on to the next title. Even long tail titles–that is, ones that perform consistently well over an extended period of time–make more money the earlier they come out.

Moreover, we decided to release other characters as well because part of the fun of Smash is the anticipation: “Which character will join the fray next!?” If we keep distributing content, we can maintain that excitement, and I think that’s a really great thing.

so the issue I have with the "it released so soon after release why wasn't it on the disc?" argument is that games are finished long before they actually come to print, and it would make sense to have some of the team working on additional content during that down time. There's simply no direct evidence that the DLC was ready before the fll game went to print and it was decided to be omitted for most of these games. I mean who's to say that Nintendo hadn't made all its DLC during the full development, decided to keep it out to sell it later, and then just waited longer than the companies everyone is accusing of being so evil?

Hmm, interesting.

I do think Smash would still be a complete game, even if DLC (including Mewtwo) was never a thing, and I feel like that even if I didn't spit out extra money for Smash, I'd still feel satisfied with a finish product in my hands.

I think Sakurai is handling Smash DLC fine so far, and I'm hoping it continues to be great.

Isn't Splatoon and Yoshi launching with day one DLC that can only be unlocked by purchasing $10 amiibo's?

I feel that day 1 DLC is a scam... while some other DLC is worth it. It all depends..

Of course not. Nintendo requests them, not him. 

Some DLC is good. Most DLC is not. It's a shame, but it's the truth.
