Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo will become obsolete

vivster said:
Depends how you define obsolete. Some may say, having only 10% market share makes them obsolete.
Let's just see what they do with their next opportunity to screw up. Nintendo 3rd Party is only a matter of time.

mmm lets cast our minds back to the last underperforming Nintendo console, the Gamecube. They then followed that up by..oh yes the mega popular Wii that sold over 100m. I also remember reading posts very similar to yours when Gamecube was at its lowest ebb. Nintendo could quite easily follow up the Wii U with another success, just as easily as they could fuck up.

Blame Nintendo for their bad decision making.

The gamepad wasnt probably the best decsion, but nintendo has also made good choices in the past,  perhaps you have not the article yet but nintendo has saved up lots of money in the bank ensuring them to stay on the console competition for some decades

"

Is Nintendo doomed? Not likely. Just take a look at how much money it's got in the bank

Fiscal projections. Capital budgeting. Shareholder investment. Yadda yadda yadda. Unless you like accounts and annual reports and stock markets and banks and all that, the world of corporate finance is really boring. But not today. Check this out for a completely not boring financial fact about Nintendo: Nintendo has £6.7 ($10.5) billion in the bank and, even if making big losses every year, that considerable nest egg would keep the company going until 2052. That's, like, 40 years away.

Oh, the often quoted article with bad math, which suggested that Nintendo's cash reserves (812 billion yen in March 2011) would suffice for 40 years, no matter what they do. So where are they now?

If Nintendo were still burning money like in 2011 - 2013,they would have had big problems within 10 years, not after 40 years.

Gladly, they have turned the ship around in 2014.

You should also take into account that those huge expenses in that period include Wii U launch, the last year of its development and starting its production.
But yes, while usually Ninty starts profiting on HW in its first year, doing it during the second year may be slow for Ninty standards, but it's the fastest its competitors could ever achieve before PS4, so we can say that even with a very bad start Ninty managed to turn again its whole HW line viable, and doing it with modest sales is not a trivial achievement.

As someone who is new here, are these threads common? Like there weren't any Nintendoom threads for a while, and now it seems like there's been a baby boom of them. what up wit dis

My theory is that a lot of people around here were convinced that Smash for Wii U would help the Wii U compete with the PS4 & X1 this holiday season. That obviously didn't happen. Now we don't really know where to go from here...

Please what? Getting better with Smash, yes. But competing with PS4 and X1? Did someone really thought that?

The reactions in these threads are always very telling, apparently the box that plays the games and the exclusivity of those games is more important than simply being able to play the games.

Uncharted on Tablets - what do you think?

I was more talking about being on all consoles and the PC, but with PSNow it will be (or is already) possible to play Uncharted on a tablet anyway and I don't mind. As long as the overall quality of the game isn't butchered to accomodate the weakest platform (which with streaming won't be the case cause the platform that the game is playing on will always be the same) I don't really care on how many platforms a game comes out.

It isn't always about graphical quality, but do you really think gameplay will be unaffected by the decision to support other platforms? Different input, different usage habits? I have my doubts the game will stay the same, if tablet-users are in the mind of the game designer. If on the other hand games simply streamed that are developed for a different platform, the users of the streaming may experience some difficulties in controlling the game.

Maybe I see too much problems, but I simply don't think such decisions are without effect on the game.

Wii U Pro Controller, DualShock 3 + 4, and the Xbox One controllers (360 + XBO), PS Vita, 3DS+CirclepadPro, Nvidia Shield as well as many gamepads for PC, Android and iOS aren't that different in their layout and functions.

Additionally, Nintendo could offer official Nintendo controllers (with a great profit margin) on many different platforms for the "true Nintendo experience". If these accessories are worth their money (good quality, enough supported games), they would sell... the expensive Guitar hero / Rock band / Wii fit accessories sold in millions.

Aye, which is why everyone should go PC only. In all fairness there's really no place for Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo's stuff, and all would benefit greatly if they all ceased to exist.

Good point. I mean I loke my consoles but PC seems more and more like a seasonable option.

Yup. I remember back when Mario Kart 8 came out, around June, there were plenty of people who thought that with Smash releasing later that year, the Wii U would easily be able to stay ahead of the X1 in sales. That was a fairly common opinion around here, actually. Then the holiday season came and X1's sales exploded while Wii U's didn't really, even with Smash. I believe it's left a lot of people around here very confused and upset, hence all the threads like this.
