Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why can't other 2nd party Nintendo devs ever compete with RARE?

In the 90's Rare was perhaps the most succesfull game studios out there. They were blessed by having all the talented devs at the right time and being owned + their games published by Nintendo is what made them all the more succesfull. They were just Rare.

People these days compare Retro Studios (which is overrated) or 2nd party studios to Rare, but the truth is Rare cannot be imitaded thats why they are so Rare.

Isnt Retro supposed to be Nintendo's new RARE?

To be fair, the only RARE game Ive really liked is Goldeneye 007

This, and the game for me was Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2. Plus Retro's DKC's are just as good.

Hmm... I bet people forgot what made Rare and afterwards Retro a great studio... Nintendo's help!
Rare was a mess back in the days, Nintendo had to invest a lot to made them what they became, same with Retro.

Furthermore, Intelligent systems, Hal they all make great games.

Well, the main reason is that Retro hasn't made as many games :p

Between the Metroid Prime series, the DKC games, and the help they did on MK7, I'd say they're on their way. A new IP would be nice, though.

If Rare was still the same company as in the 90s and still second party to Nintendo they wouldn't make as many games as they used to... I'd say Retro is better than Rare, if only they stopped making Donkey Kong games.

Never played a Rare game, but they look like weird collect-a-thons to me.

Uhm... Right, Samus.

Did you know that Rare's GoldenEye 007 inspired pretty much all the console fps games (including Metroid Prime) that came out after it? Its also thanks to Rare that we got the DK Country series which Retro revived and is riding on its popularity these days.

No, Retro was founded by Nintendo and supported by Miyamoto.

Rare had to prove themelves to Nintendo. They made good games for Nintendo systems like BattleToads before Nintendo even heard about them.It wasnt until they went to Japan and made Nintendo shit their pants with the 3D graphics Rare was capable of.

After buying Rare sure they became more succesfull and perhaps Nintendo helped them improve some skills but it was all Rare that did GoldenEye, DKC, Perfect Dark,Conker and Dinosaur Planet.(SFA)

The biggest hurdle appears to be Nintendo itself.

During the SNES, N64 and early parts of the GC era, Nintendo was a lot more open, experimental and less restrictive with the types of games it let its second party developers work on.

Since, a quarter or about half way through the Wii's life cycle there was a shift that contracted most games Nintendo would put support behind. We are only now seeing Nintendo shift away from that stance in terms of the games it supports but the fact is had Rare stuck around they wouldn't have done nearly as many original games as they did in the N64 era.

Retro could have done more games in the Wii era then Metroid Prime 3 (and technically Trilogy) and Donkey Kong Country Returns, Nintendo just didn't let them pull the trigger on allocating sources to other projects.

Pretty much this! I have a feeling that Retro will only be known as the DK and Metroid studio, which is a shame because they have the potential to do so much more!

Because reasons. But Rare will never be there same after the idiots at Microsoft bought them. I mean, they thought they bought FREAKING DONKEY KONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didnt it take like 10 people to make goldeneye back in the day. Now it probably takes 200 to make a AAA game

Not just quality, but quanity as well!

What is the problem?

With N64 kind of graphics and ease of development I immediately thought of DS/3DS!

Here you can find quality and quantity but, unfortunately for the developers, maybe not the big cash!
