Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ubisoft: "Whatever", to those against it's DLC practices.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-07-03-gamer-resistance-to-digital-decreasing-ubisoft

Last year, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag launched alongside a handful of "Time Saver" downloadable content packs. For $1 or $2, players could stock up on in-game resources, or reveal the locations of the game's many collectibles and activities without the need for actual exploration. That sort of perk would have been freely accessible through cheat codes in previous generations, and it's not hard to imagine the uproar charging for them would have caused in the early days of the last generation of systems. Speaking with GamesIndustry Internationalat E3 last month, Ubisoft VP of digital publishing Chris Early recalled the reaction--or lack thereof-- to those time-saver packs.

"There was no resistance," Early said. "Maybe there were 12 guys somewhere who said something, but whatever. As a whole, there wasn't a problem."

Disgusting.  Thier attitudes are amoung the fucking worst and most arrogant imaginable.

1$? Heh, that's much better than unlocking Cheats in Dead Rising 2: Off The Record, which costs 6$ xD

In game resource boosts?

How dare they. Those monsters. Do they expect me to actually put time into completing the videogame?!

i agree with him, whatever, its not like you have to buy it, a d doing so spoils the game anyway, its not like buying them gives you an unfair advantage in multiplayer.

people whining over the most trivial of shit these days

i wonder if they would have whined in the early 90s that they had to buy game mags to get the cheat codes from,  too.

you can buy game resources witg real cash in most mobile games,  most mmos,  and so on,  yet ubisoft do it and theyre the scum of the earth?  sheesh

In those old days, developers were willing to give away a lot of free stuff.  My take is what has changed.  Its really not the developers that have changed its the gamers.  Gamers become more entitled and believe that making content is free but they are not willing to put any of their money on buying games where the developer recoup their money.

With that said, paying for crap like this is going way down the barrel and there needs to be a line drawn.  It would be great if developers and gamers could come to a happy medium where the content provider can get paid and the gamer can get stuff at a decent price.

@Bolded:  You make a very good point.  I forgot that most of the stuff people complained about now was not actually free but you had to purchase a game mag for.  How easily we forget those days.

Isn't that how it starts, trivial?  It's how it becomes acceptable to the point when its NOT trivial and you have DLC for huge chunks of games, even bigger than what they already cut out and make you pay for twice.

It's this kind of attitude that allows things to fester and become worse and worse.  When your favorite IP starts charging you for the next level or the energy refils or multiplayer, maybe you'll sing a different tune.

you're overreacting,  its a dollar or two for time saver packs,  nothing more.

its not extra content,  if anything buying it actually shortens the game and decreases its value,  but then not everyone has hours upon hours to fully complete a game the old fashion way, and even the old fashion way had basically pay to win options.

namely buy game mag,  eg nintendo power,  thumb to map/guide/walkthrough/cheat section.

those mags were not free,  were they.

The mobile games argument is absurd.  I've yet to hear of a mobile game that has a $60 entry price.  Most mobile games are free to play and offer the premium stuff for a price, and that's fair.  But Assassin's fucking Creed is $60 at launch, there's no justification for this kind of thing.

time saver packs are not dlc.

just ask yourself what the c in dlc stands for.
