Forums - Sony - PS4: Support for PS1 and PS2 Titles with Native 1080p(confirmed?), VR Demos and More Coming According to Insider

Lock if old.

E3 is approaching fast, and according to industry insider Ahsan Rasheed, that is normally quite accurate with the information his sources give him, Sony has a lot of interesting things in the pipeline, as he said today on Twitter.

Be excited: 1. Local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p rendering for select titles. 2. Bluray+Media Player updates

3. VR demos from at future events 4. PS4 exclusive game stuff 5. PlayStation Now launch

Number 1 I’ve known for a good minute, but software is still buggy and not every game works. Please be excited.

Ahsan continued by giving more details on what’s going on behind the scenes with the Project Morpheus virtual reality headset:

Devs I’m talking to really want to try Morpheus. Community feels like it is the best way to introduce VR to mainstream consumers.

Oh and Sony has opened the floodgates asking for open criticism from third parties on Morpheus and what they want to see in a final product.

If you are interested in how Sony is approaching Morpheus, they are designing it similar to PS4 and Dualshock 4. Taking developer feedback.

If proven true, a few of those elements would probably raise the excitement level for the console between those that have asked for some form of backwards compatibility. As for the design of Morpheus, I’m not surprised: Sony has learned that developer feedback is incredibly important for development, and seems to be putting that notion to good use like it did with the PS4 itself.

Of course we should take all of this with a pinch of salt, considering that there has been no official announcement from Sony itself, but we can only hope that Ahsan’s sources are accurate. There are quite a few PlayStation and PS2 games I’d love to play on my PS4.

If you’re wondering if it’s possible for older titles to be rendered in 1080p, it definitely is. PC Emulators for both consoles (and for the PSP as well) already support that feature and it works wonders, so it isn’t that incredible that the PS4 would be able to do the same with the right software. Its architecture is not that different from that of a gaming PC, after all.

Those all sound really cool. But is the BC part talking about downloadable versions of old games, or being able to actually put your disc in the console?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I really hope this is put your disk in the console BC, got i kept all my PS1 and PS2 games, the only consoles i have ever done that with.

BC games can't possibly be turned into "native" 1080p. They very will could be upscaled to 1080p though.

However, it is smart of Sony to copy the VC idea and put out its rich PS legacy as well.

I've haven't heard anyone mention local BC on the PS4, just their OnLive-style streaming.

Dark Cloud, Dark Chronicle and Rogue Legacy pleaaaaaaaaase Sony. So annoyed I missed out on them the first time when I was too young to realise how good they were, though I wonder if this is going to be restricted to Sony exclusives.

PS1 games on the other hand isn't really exciting for me. Aside from some platformers I can't imagine there is many games that hold up well now.

As someone who has used Dolphin(Wii Emu) I can tell you that native 1080p for older titles is possible and quite beautiful. I tried Xenoblade Chronicles in 1080p and added AA and it was just great. The textures won't look better but the whole picture is extremely sharp, which doesn't happen with a mere upscale.

I have heard that emulator rumor a few months ago from somewhere else so it might come true. I'm not particularly interested in using the old discs but it would be a great profit opportunity for Sony to put even a fraction of popular PS1/2 titles into the store.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Eurogamer said that months ago...

So this part is definitivily true... the X question is if it will be PSN downloadable games or PS1/PS2 disk reads?

That's not native. They didn't go in and recreate all of the graphical elements of the games. That's a really good upscaler and engine over the existing 480p native game.

It is possible.

You change the render to 1080p but the textures, assets and everything else will continue low res (well some filters to make it look better) but all the 3D render part can be 1080p.

Upscale 1080p is easy... just upscale the final output to 1080p but emulators take the hard way rendering the game in native 1080p.

It is native... the graphic render is working in native 1080p... upscale works on the output (can be done even in the HDMI output) but the emulator render the game in native 1080p... all the graphic process and the output render is native 1080p.

Now about the assets... there are some that will be upscaled to match the new render but all 3D part will be 1080p... and some assets will be fine because they already are in HD... just look some games on PS4/Xbone that uses 2048x2048 textures... I'm sure some PS2 games used 1080p textures already... in fact the assets in most cases are in high definition than the render.
