Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would it be smart for Apple to create their own console? Please read OP

So, I was thinking, despite I know that some of you will come with proper arguments to counter mine, please hear me out before posting.

Apple is a big company with lots of resources, so it's not like they couldn't had done so if they wanted, but maybe they don't want to take that risk, however I have no way to tell for sure. But, for me, there are a few positive points that they would benefit greatly should they ever make a  proper console:

1. There's an already existing and succesful product family on their company. iDevices and Mac could easily have integration with said console. This also might help with marketing on existing Apple users, since the console could use the user's iTunes account and unifyied account system would be very well received by users.

2. The console OS and arquitecture  could be similar to Mac systems, which would allow devs to port their games on Mac systems with relative ease. One of the main weak spots on Mac is the lack of gaming support, so with this the gaming audience on mac could increase and be profitable for both Apple and gaming companies.

3. Already existing services. Anyone with an Apple product knows that iTunes and the App Store are well-made and well-supported services. With iTunes, this console could also be used as a multimedia device (Watching iTunes movies on your 52" Full HD Tv? Hell yeah!) and App Store could be redone specifically for the console and work the same way XBL and  PSN stores work.

4. Airplay. Not everyone has an Apple TV, so the option to play, let's say, iPhone/iPod racing games on your TV via the Apple Console would be neat and useful. While we're at it, might aswell absorb the whole Apple TV and all of it's functions, this one is a bit crazy but who knows, maybe it would work in the end?

That's all I can think of right now. So, do you agree? Do you disagree?

It's not a bad idea, but I'll wait for more comments to see if they can change my mind.

If Jobs were alive, I'm positive he could pull it off with just how popular that brand is. But without him, it would probably be a disaster. There's a reason Apple hasn't released another revolutionary product since his passing.

Well the last time they released a console they got burned pretty hard.
I think you could call the wonderswan a success compared to it.

But nowadays I think it could work if they want to. But I doubt they will.

Consoles are a whole different beast, there's no automatic translation of brand popularity and success just because you have a household name and Apple's consumer hostile policies and desire for closed developer environments would cause them a lot of trouble in a market where the average customer puts a little bit more thought into their purchase and that rides on continued purchasing incentives and profits from vastly more expensive software than you find on phones or tablets.

I don't think Apple's smart device success would translate to console success; they would essentially be attempting to move consumers in the opposite direction of the revolution they helped start and away from the heaviest convenience segment where they have ruled, it would be a philosophical contradiction as far as gaming goes. Besides; they have zero pedigree in this field as it stands and would likely fail to garner vital 3rd party support and they are hardly software geniuses on their own.

What I think could be a problem is 3rd party support: A lot of developers already think it's a pain in the ass that they have to develop for such a huge amount of platforms, I doubt they'll be happy with an other one. So, would you develop for a console that could be the worst selling console ever, even worse than the Wii U? Also the fact that you need good 1st party support/exclusives could be a problem.

they can build a quality console, but.

They dont have games.

Retail might not support them given how itunes partly helped kill their music sales.

Publishers, do they want to be apples bitch ? i doubt it.

Competition is great.

It would cost a lot, shareholders would bitch till no end.  Might be a massive loss.

No. Apple doesn't price competitively, and their is no way they can compete with their own mobile devices.

I once read someone wrote "Jobs was Apple, but Apple wasn't Jobs", so I kind of have to agree with you here. On the other side, his ideas or not, he knew how to pull them off succesfully, I believe.
