Forums - Nintendo Discussion - will Wii U officially become $199 this year?

To be honest I think the system's goose is cooked pretty much either way. It's been a disaster for Nintendo from the day they unveiled it.

$199.99 and ditching or creating a smaller/cheaper version of the game pad would be probably their best play at this point, but $99.99 didn't save the GameCube, though it did provide a temporary boost for sure.

I think the larger problem is without a Wiimote like gimmick that creates an insane frenzy with consumers people simply don't want the "modern Nintendo console" (which basically means 3-5 really good Nintendo games per year + limited third party support + feature support such as online which tends to be behind the rest of the industry).

The only way to really change this is to have some kind of new miracle software title that drives a large number of systems to be sold, but that is also much easier said than done.

Ur right about Gamecube but when it was $99 the competitors were at $149-$179, thats only $50-80 difference. If Wii U becomes $199 this year, thats a $200-300 difference

To be honest I think the PS4/XB1 are basically a different market entirely.

I don't think there are many people who are really interested in what the PS4/X1 offer who are going to jump ship and choose a Wii U instead regardless of price.

The person who wants a PS4/X1 is looking for a system that has all the major future third party games (the Destinys, future GTAs, etc.) and is a hardware upgrade over the PS3/360 that they already own, the Wii U doesn't satisfy those needs at any price point.

Wii U's competetion is probably more effectively the PS3/360, so there it would help get more competetive is selling to kids for example, but they PS3/360 are also cheap and have the Wii U beat pretty soundly with hundreds of games already available, many of which are discounted to $20-$30 a pop. That's still a problem.

They have to cut the price, cause Wii U just isn't worth $299, but I think they'll just cut it to $249. $100 is too much of a hit, they won't be able to afford it and it would make them look desperate at the same time.

I think they just plan to redesign the Wii U to cut the manufacturing costs and release the new games - MK8, Smash, X, Bayo2, hopefully something more like a new Metroid Prime (or at least Trilogy HD), they should tease a new mature Zelda. All this should help them sell more hardware, though it obviously won't turn Wii U into a runaway success.

A $199 price would be absolutely awesome and I'd finally buy one for myself, but I just can't see them doing it.
Maybe they could do a 3DS $80 cut and go to $219? That would actually be a great move.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

If the refuse to make games the markets wants and they lack the ability to bring in 3rd parties.

A price cut is a must, They know they will sale x amount of Mario SSBM and Kart, they can work out just how big a loss on hardware they can eat with software making it all up.

If they drop the price to $199, they might as well just give Sony their balls. Better to sell poorly than to be a console bitch.

With that said, I'd buy two.

Wii U's price is fine right now.

Power means little in the grand scheme of things. You don't play "power"

That goes against everything I was raised to believe.

The phrase you're all looking for is price elasticity of demand, and you can bet that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are all well versed with applying the formula.

Maybe around the summer time. I think it will be $200, it will get a good bump but its not going to give them the lead, even with MK out.

nintendo is a software company, why should they take such a big lose if they dont have the software to sell?

In case Mario Kart 8 or SSB4 fails to "save" the Wii U, then i wouldnt be surprised to see a price drop of that magnitude.

I think they could offer a gameless Wii U for 250 U$, and that could feel like a price reduction for some, not everyone likes to buy the game that comes with the hardware right now, and they could use the resulting savings in something more their alley, like Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World or Rayman Legends.

I think by the end of the year we will see a Mario Kart 8 bundle at 250 U$, but not a 200 U$ Wii U, that would be too big of a price drop and will hit the financials of the company.

A better investment of Nintendo's money could be courting 3rd party developers, and helping them to port their current engines to the platform, if they get Konami or EA to make a soccer game for it, it will help the sales on Europe and South-America, if they can get Square-Enix to port their Kingdom Hearts 3 for the console it could help in all territories and so on.

Right now the console is great for the people who like Nintendo games, but they could attract more people if the other games are at least ALSO available in their machine, and I am sure that they could get some games that could work fine on the Wii U, like Skylanders, Rayman Legends and others.
