Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Wii U didn't meet our expectations. Is it a flop?

Is the Wii U a flop?

Yes 64 19.45%

No, it's a MAJOR flop. 50 15.20%

other 214 65.05%

Total:328

Many people on the Chartz believe that a flop is a product that fails to meet expectations of forum members. I personally find this line of thinking to be absurd, but people insist that expectations are the best way to determine if a product is a flop. Here is an accurate definition of a flop based on expectations.

- flop: [noun] - a product that performs considerably below the general expectations of the community.

Let's apply this reasoning to determine if the Wii U is a flop or not.

Observe

Expected Wii U Sales 3.44m
Actual Wii U Sales 2.45m
Percent Difference -29%
# of expectations met 16 (32%)
# of expectations not met 34 (68%)

Expected Wii U sales = average predictions based on this thread
Actual Wii U sales are according to VGChartz

As you can see, the Wii U has failed to meet the expectations of VGChartz users. The average VGChartz user expected the Wii U to sell around 3.44 million units its first year. Unfortunately, the console only sold 2.44 million, nearly one-million units (30%) less than predicted. And that's not the worst statistic from this data. Out of a total of 50 entries, the Wii U only met 16 predictions. That means the Wii U failed to meet 34 predictions, which is more than two-thirds of total predictions. It's safe to say, the Wii U failed to meet expectations.

Again, I don't agree with the reasoning that expectations determine a product's success, but many do. For those who do, is the Wii U a flop? It only met 32% of total predictions. I'm not too sure with the logic behind this reasoning, so for those who follow this reasoning, maybe you could help me out.

Is the Wii U a flop? If so, is it a MAJOR flop? If you answered yes to both, then the next question is obviously: Do we need to talk about it?

EDIT: Oh, and for those who have previously used expectations to determine if a game is a flop, don't come in here and change your reasoning to suit your agenda (you know who you are). If you do, then you WILL BE EXPOSED.

No, it is not a flop nor a Major one.
The Wii U didn't reach my estimated 2.5 Million (darn you few people who didn't buy the Wii U!) but that doesn't mean it did bad. And who in the world expected 3.44 Million?! Sheesh.

Uhhh...you predicted 5.0 - 5.5 million units sold, which was the second highest prediction. You also had the highest prediction for the 3DS

Lol, looks like I did. I don't know what I was thinking though. That would have been impossible based on its release date.

Do you remember when that thread was created though? Was it that Seece thread from the end of 2011?

Nice. Obviously, yes, it's a gigantic flop. It is the right--no, the responsibility--of forum-goers everywhere to decide floppyhood. Pretty much the rest of the world is counting on us. Nintendo is probably monitoring this thread very closely.

It's funny, though, the false dichotomy many people believe in, where only success and flop seem to exist. Oh, and MAJOR FLOP, of course, though I think that's a subset of the flop.

Slightly below expectations? NO! FLOP! 1,999,999 units sold of a projected 2,000,000? FLOP!

Kind of sad, and yet, kind of fun.

Beginning of 2012 I think. Still, I think pretty much everyone expected a Nov/Dec release at that point (based on past trends and the little info from Nintendo) so us not knowing the release date wouldn't be a factor.

Edit: What a nice sig you have, Jay.

It was also predicted by some that the WiiU would hurt PS360 sales and beat them both during the holiday season.

I think we need to talk about this.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Why do so many people think the Wii U launch's a flop only because it didn't match Wii launch numbers? The Wii was a HUGE success. Still the Wii U launch is several times more successful than PS360 launch numbers. PS3 launch was terrible.

Wii U is not a flop/major flop. It may not have sold out, but at the same time it also had a really high supply. It's also not fair at all to talk about a system being a flop or not when it hasn't even reached it's halfway mark in its life. This, of course, will also apply to the Vita. We don't know what will happen, so maybe the Vita wont end up being a flop.

I was expecting a mid-October to late-October release at that point. Around E3 though I put it to mid-Novemeber.

Now, one month wouldn't give the Wii U around 3 Million more sales but I feel like if it did release at my predicted time then maybe 3 Million or so could have been achieved. I also expected the Wii U to build up more hype.

People can expect whatever they like, it's profitable for Nintendo, is leading the 8th Gen by over 2.4 million, and ZombiU is the hardest game I've played since Demon Souls. If you're a "hardcore" gamer you have to play and beat ZombiU, yeah it's THAT hard.

Plus it's got Mario games, his games sell more in 2 days than most do in a lifetime baby! =D
