People here said that vg is 15% off, but damn ps2 underttacked by a coulpe mills O_0

We have used a +/- 10% range of accuracy for a few Years now. Obviously there is no known range but it seems to fit quite well.

The problem with this rule though comes when the numbers themself are so large. You cant really use them on those numbers. You can use them on Yearly numbers though. The PS2 had shipped ~1.6 Million between January and July 2012. Being 160k off wouldnt really be anything major but it just looks like a 100% undertrack. Thats extremely alarming.

We know that the majority of PS2 sales now come from places with very little tracking, or no tracking at all. Its understandable how VGChartz can be some way off on numbers from these markets and the numbers we do get are far, far better than nothing... But these numbers simply should never be pushed out as fact like they were in the article.

So the 10% range is used for vgc yearly tracking? Anyways vgc stated that they numbers are estimation, but that dosen't stop them, or large publications like internet sites or the guinness book of world record form using it as facts. I even hear Square Enix are using this site O_0

Yup, someone had to say it. But then again, if that's their numbers, they should indeed report it. The method can clearly go wrong, and they should've corrected that long ago. Now, the numbers says DS is above PS2, which would be huge news, what would harm more their credibility?

This has been a though year to my trust in VGC. But, thats another discussion.

It's very probable that the PS2 still has the higher amount of sales, but 2.4 million PS2s in stores and warehouses worldwide doesn't sound that impossible. Perhaps it sold a million or so more than what VGChartz is reporting but only somebody with priority issues would freak out about it. DS will outsell the PS2 within a few months anyway.

But you're right about VGChartz not being very credible. It's all guesstimating and there is no transparency in the data whatsoever.

2.4 Million PS2s on shelves/ships in July really would be impossible.

There were less than 600,000 Wii consoles and less than 600,000 PS3 consoles on shelves/ships at the same point in time. Around a Million 360s.

2.4 Million would be more than Wii, PS3 and 360 combined at the same point in time.

No. The 10% range is generally used for Weekly sales. Its nothing official, just a "rule" used by people on the forum.

It simply wouldnt work for lifetime hardware numbers.

10% of 100 Million is of course 10 Million. Hardware sales could be reported anywhere between 90-110 Million. Thats a long way off.
10% of 100,000 is 10,000. Weekly hardware could be reported between 90-110k. Thats not too bad.

Again, its nothing official just something we use on the forums.

supported. we should a link to that article on the front page

Sales for older systems/games have been suspect for years sadly. It's up to one of the site owners to go back and dig up all the information and fix things. I guess they won't fix them because the people that care about them would be in the minority.

It's just that simple.

As far as I understand, the PS2 isn't tracked from VGChartz at all. It doesn't show up on the weekly charts. So it's numbers are taken from shipments, like other old consoles. Problem in this case is, that the PS2 keeps on selling. So it's entry should be updated. The article claiming DS won against PS2 was simply wrong.

I thought this was very solid evidence.

@OP. If vgchartz doesn't have sales figures, what formula do you propose given the shipped numbers to provide a reasonable estimate for the PS2 retailer sales numbers?
