If its no longer illegal, can employers still fire you/deny employment if you have it in your system?

I should think so. Alcohol is legal but you can't show up for work drunk.

@OT, this is pretty cool. I support legalization but it's not a major issue for me. I don't smoke.

I'm not saying show up to work high.

What I mean is some places do urine/hair tests to see if you have smoked in the last few days/weeks.  Could employers still deny employment if you don't pass a test saying you have done a legal drug a few weeks ago?

They got it done before Canada. Big hurray to you guys. Our prime minister is Mitt Romney ish though.

I'm not sure what Mitt Romney ish means. Our liberal president isn't legalizing marijuana either.

The most conservative we've had in a while in matters such as these. That's true he is not legalizing that but the states in US do have more power than provinces do in Canada. So they are  taking the initiative. Was also looking forward to the food labeling of genetically modified foods in california. Prop 37 i think.

That's pretty difficult though, are there tests that you can do like breathalyzers to test if you are under the influence of Mariuana currently and not just test if you've smoked it within the last couple of days?  You can't show up to work drunk, but if you wanna get tore up over the weekend that's your business.  I'm curious how companies will handle weed if it isn't an all or nothing thing like it is now where they can just test if you've done any weed within the last few days or even the last month or so with some tests.

...

This makes up for the presidential election by a lot! I didn't expect for both to pass let alone either one. I really hope this catches on with the rest of the country.

The only problem I see with this; which is might be good is if the the government over rides the laws and makes it illegal again "knocks on wood." It could cause a massive protest which could end up legalizing it.

Anyway hurray for both states. Here's to other potential initiatives.

This is amazing, I've been following this one for a while. Within a decade or two, as more states do the same, it will be impossible to enforce federal drug laws to cannabis. I always wondered if I'd see it legalized at the federal level in my lifetime, and it looks likely at this point. Just seeing it legalized at the state level is a big deal. It's necessary medicine for many people, you can't overdose on it, there are no addictive properties to it, and too many people go to jail because of the unfair laws surrounding it.

Unrelated, I may very well end up in Colorado for work. It would be refreshing to see such a relaxed environment, not unlike Amsterdam (which I've never visited, but have wanted to).

After this, it'll finally be time to legalize hemp production. It's long overdue, as well.

This is the problem. Employers need a way to determine whether or not you are currently under the influence -- otherwise they have no way to differentiate between people who smoke on their own time and people who smoke right before work. I don't know whether or not such a method exists, but if it does not or is more expensive, I expect the law to continue to allow employers to deny employment to people who 'fail' drug tests.

I don't know how it would effect jobs in Colorado. I do know in 'liberal' California you can – if you test positive.  They even pass a bill that then 'govenator' Schwarzenegger vetoed saying that you couldn’t be fired if you used it medicinally (provided it didn’t effect your job.)

Yes, he was, in my opinion, a coward,  even though there is plenty of footage of him smoking marijuana.

Unfortunately, it is looking like Prop 37 will not pass.  So you will not have a right to know what is in your food.

In my opionion It's a win for big business and a loss for things that eat and breathe.
