Microsoft actually may have a shot at a killing blow at Sony, question is whether or not they want to do it. Personally I don't think it's important enough for Microsoft to finance such a blow.
Is it too early to start speculating on which of Sony's many first party studios will jump ship? and to who's side?

You do realize game console business that MS and Sony are actually major partners in the industry, right?  As a whole, their laptop / windows partnership is much more than their console rivalry.  I don't think MS wants the whole company to go down.

that may be, but any laptop maker to enter the market, and all of the rest also use windows. Sony doesn't matter in that sense their market share would be replaced by another windows laptop just made by someone else.

maybe MS wants to white night sony in the tablet/laptop/smart tv market like they did for nokia. ;)

I think a sony ms partnership would be great. not a merger by any means, but sony does make good hardware still and teaming up with ms for their os would be smart. maybe even enter the next console gen as partners. Imagine that. I dont think it will happen though. They both want ownership of the living room and I dont think they'll partner up on that level.

My guess is people are buying more cheap/crappy TVs. Sony = Quality when it comes to TVs, that's what I tell everyone and It's sad when people go for the cheapest TV only to face problems in the long run.

The quality of Sony's HDTV's have drop significantly over the past 5 years. Samsung is actually the leader now. Why do you think Sony is losing billions every quarter. Sony is no longer the leader is anything right now except maybe monthly loses.

In smartphones Sony is a cold brand and in a couple of years Sony won't be making any TVs because by then Chinese companies will have taken marketshare (Samsung is already planning to leave TVs because it's not profitable any more).

Sony's only successful division I think is gaming and I think that's Sony's chance to survive. But if Apple decides to go into gaming consoles I think Sony's days are numbered.

it is sad to see the old giants leave tvs, but there needs to be a major shift, to move new tvs, 3d is not it a porduct that alianates that many consumers wont do. a smart/touch tv might be the future, or soemthing we cannot imagine, 4k and 8k are nice but nothing to back them up, maybe 8k  smart, touch, with ability to section the srceen and adjust resolution in sections on the fly

lol at all the "expertz" in this thread, our resident armchair analyst never cease to amaze

Great contribution.

Lol at all the hyper sensitive souls that feel the need to downplay and deflect.  Nothing constructive to say?

that came off as "hyper sensitive" ....really lol ok

anyway what's there to downplay? the loss was smaller than expected, only half of it is attributed to their business of which most was a direct result of situations that they couldn't have predicted or done anything about, share prices fall because that's what they do when you post a loss, I've said this before, it's going to continue to fall, Kaz's outline was never gonna change that. It's only "OMG SHOCKING" to you and people like you because Sony's posting a loss, for some reason, something they've been doing for a while now is blowing your face off, sorry that I don't care that much for you guy's new found insight every time Bloomberg writes an article, to me it's just reiterating the same thing that's already been said.

Sony as a whole is restructuring, and restructuring for the better, none of what they've done have been put into effect yet and the benefits of that won't be seen until later (1-2 years later) so until then, yeah, non of this means anything really, I know Sony isn't going anywhere, it's not my business to make sure you guys know that too (especially given the fact that it would be nothing short of talking a brick wall) but that won't stop me from laughing at the hopes and dreams here, some of which are really incredibly funny

Sony did you hear....you can't afford a PS4

edit: off topic FUCK YEAH MALDONADO, P2 BABY!!!

I'd prefer a Sony Google partnership.

Sony wants to make their next console profitable out the gate.
I don't know where you guys are coming up with this idea that they are going to put off the next gen because it would cost too much money.
The R&D is already spent, you know.
And with the games coming out for ps3 this year, I don't foresee another price drop for a while.

That would work also. I am not a big fan of google. I think they will be having massive problems with with all the personal data they have on people. It seems to come up from time to time and i think they will get worse their business model depends on it doesn't it? MS is just the right amount of "bad" in a big corporation for me. Does sony have an android tablet or was theirs their own os?

Almost all of their new products are android.

Tablet, phone, etc.

Sony and Google have a lot of partnerships together.

Wouldn't your minds be blown if MS ends up buying Sony? Just like with Nintendo and Sega... the biggest of rivals... and then one in the same. Blew everyone's minds then, I could see the same happening here. Except not anytime soon since Sony is just bleeding value right now, so no reason to pay money for them now. Plus they'd have major restructuring to do. Sony could make more selling off their businesses individually. But yeah, whether you want to call it synergy or just terrible management, they will not be existing as a company a decade from now.

Google doesn't have the manpower to handle an aquisition of Sony.  Sony is too corporate and full of physical entities for Googles right now who's main businesses are not physical, thus do not require a high level of oversight.  They COULD do it, but I don't think it would go too well.  Microsoft or dare I say... Apple could do a better job.  Shoot, apple could buy Sony straight up right now and still have 2/3 of it's cash reserves.
