Forums - Sales Discussion - *Will Sony ever return to the top?*

not as long as Sony's management keeps wanting an elitist image for their product without the proper ammo to back it up...

so wait at least 7 years till there si new management and a new gen...

Based on their recent behaviour, no.

And the reason for their failings in this generation is not the lack of games (although the lack of games and the failure have a common cause). It's their arrogance. Sony took everything for granted, charged too much money and cheated their customers (which resulted in them getting hacked).

Unless there are some big changes in Sony's philosophy, they won't do well next generation.

As a Sony fan it pains me to say this but this guy hit the nail on the head. It was sonys arrogance that made the ps3 flop for. two years

I think they will take the next generation with PS4. Two big reasons for 360 beating the PS3 in sales was that price was more affordable and it launched earlier. SONY could have easily swept Microsoft even if just the price was cheaper. Just a little while ago, a CEO from SCEA said that when they make the PS4, the graphics wont be be more noticeable when the PS2 successor came out and the visuals were outstanding, the best of any generation! So we will get better graphics for PS4 than PS3 but it will not be a large stretch like the 2006 release date. They had shown us with PS2 that the majority of gamers will buy amazing games rather than beautiful graphics. The highest selling one for PS3 so far is Black Ops I think with 8 million. But PS2 had GTA: San Andreas which sold almost 19 million exclusively. The XBOX version sold 2 million only. Since the PS4 will focus on game quality instead of breaking the line between video game graphics and real life, I am guessing it will quickly sell as long as there are great launch titles. Anyway I do not want another SONY home console until about 2015. The graphics are amazing so they could only innovate really. In a couple years it will hit the limit and then they will show off new tech. HAHAHA

Sony needs to do what made them the such a juggernaut during the PS1 and PS2, true the gaps will never be like the PS2 era but what Sony needs to do is release an affordable priced console at launch(this was the major blow to the PS3) and pump out great first party titles while nabbing some 3rd party exclusive material(or take it a step farther and get some exclusive 3rd part titles) to get back to the top.

as for it's handheld, it really hard to tell, it's going to take alot of work/advertisement to dethrone the "king of handhelds" I don't think the PS Vita will top the 3DS, but It will be close one(15-20 million gap...well alot closer than this handheld gen)

ignore post...

Those are major failings that Nintendo has too. Nintendo never really addressed its faults. They rode in on the backs of a new casual audience, which meant they didn't have to really address their shortcomings this time around too.  But now that these same people can buy the same kinds of cheesy games the Wii had for 99 cents on an iPhone or iPad, I wouldn't bet on them to buy the Wii U.  Nintendo's current strategies with the 3DS show the same kind of arrogance that helped Sony into first place to begin with - a steep price and the cynical belief that people will buy it just because it's a Nintendo handheld.

Frankly, Nintendo's going to have to work a lot harder to get me to buy a Wii U than Sony will for the PS4.

The real question would have been:

Will Microsoft ever be able to reach the top in the gaming industry???

Will Sony ever return to the top?
I hope not.

Wii U Nintendo Network ID, Borode

XBOX Live ID, Borode

Good exclusive games help and all but this generation sony has had very few "GREAT" exclusives. I have a ps3 because I buy a lot more games than the average person, but when I asked my friend who only owns a 360 about it he told me why should I care about all those ps3 exclusives when I only buy 6 games a year and would only be buying multiplatform games if I had one. I feel like the majority of gamers feel that way about consoles.

The only game my friends seem to actually be interested in buying is God oF War 3, and its America sales show. Other than Call of Duty and GTA4, god of war 4 will soon be the best selling ps3 game in America. The PS4 would need less good exclusives and more must have exclusives because for the average gamer 10 exclusives a year is meaningless since he will probably be only getting 1 or 2 of them.

Europe its got covered due to xbox being an "american" console being meaningless outside of America and it has GT5 as its killer game.

In Americas it has absolutly nothing to compete with Gears of War let alone Halo.

In Japan it has only had one game pass the 1million mark... Its just fortunate that nintendo dropped nearly all support for the wii in recent times.

how did dreamcast have more games that gamecube? wasnt Dc on the market for like 2 years?

i can understand saturn > n64 as it was a moderate success in japan, especially early on.
