Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ladies and gents I feel we have finally come full circle (Nintendo hate)

So for years we've seen time and time again people proclaim that Nintendo needs an HD console to compete for the "core" gamer.  Articles a plenty on it, forum posts, you've got people that proclaim to be huge Nintendo fans that cast Nintendo away because they didn't deliver experiences of the other consoles and as soon as Zelda HD is shown they'd buy a Nintendo console... Well it's here... and what do we have... new excuses as to why it will fail...

The new point against the console, it won't appeal to people who already own a PS3 or 360, and core gamers with a Wii already own a PS3 or 360.

It really saddens me to see groups act like this, moving the goal posts, cherry picking, and the like.  Not even mentioning exclusives, the fact that the console is more powerful, it flat out has to be to produce two different images, but not only that... there is three really big tech demos running in real time with texture resolution (Tokyo Street and Garden, not Zelda) I've only seen on high end PC titles have.  Then no one even talks about what the WiiU really brings to the table which is something you really can't get anywhere else, the new tablet controller and the new interface.

There's just so many applications it's not even funny.

Hate those squad based games and the retarded AI doesn't follow your commands?  Well use the tablet to give orders, outline the path for them to walk, and where to take cover.

Pokemon snap where you don't have to move the camera on screen anymore just move the controller to look around and *snap* take a picture, need I say more?

Who wouldn't want to see Starcraft II on this thing?

I could go on but it really seems like people forget how much two screens and a touch pad changed handheld gaming.  People just seem as confused and enraged about something they don't understand much like they didn't understand how the DS could change the handheld scene.  Basically it seems to me Nintendo was in a catch 22 situation to begin with for many of these people, damned if you do (make an HD console), damned if you don't (keep it lower spec), and they'll just completely ignore the higher specs and new tech they bring to the table.

Absolutly true. It doesn't matter what they relesase, people talk smack against it. DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U. There are always people that just love to put Nintendo down. .87 million consoles sold ? Doesn't matter. Glasses free 3D....doesn't matter. HD console with a tablet controller ? Doesn't matter.

It's all about jealousy. Nintendo releases amazing fun games. And they can't handle the fact they can't play them, because if they buy into Nintendo, they will lose their "hard core" stature. I mean...how stupid is that? Going out of your way to post on a thread how much you don't like a console. I admit i never had a MS console and never will...i don't know why, it's just not for me. But i have never put them down...as a matter of fact i have stuck up for them many times. You see...i am a TRUE gamer. I have supported the industry for many years, and i don't bash peoples products just because i don't like it. I am a fan of games and console advancing. I love the idea of Kinect...although i will never own it.

The proof is in the pudding. Nintendo shows a demo of a ps360 game coming to Wii U. And right away these idiots say "not even close to ps360 graphics" because they thought is was an actual Wii U game. These people need to grow up. If you don't like Nintendo thats fine, but get off of the Nintendo threads if your just going to bash. Your not hardcore....your totally softcore.

Just take time to browse the threads and see how many are anti Nintendo.....it is amazing !

Whatever Nintendo will do, they will receive a lot of hate from a very vocal minority of 'gamers'. The WiiU is no exception.

Instead of a new reply I just copy two of my replys I wrote in recent threads to show my view on this matter:

"Nintendo is by far the world's most successful console/handheld manufacturer and at the same time the most successful videogame publisher.

They sold more than 230 million Wii/DS systems so far, if I'm not mistaken that's more than 100 million more gaming devices sold than Sony since the start of the last gen for these two companies, i.e. the launch of DS/PSP.

As publishers, Nintendo sold - according to VGC data - around 650 million games on Wii/DS, Sony around 125 million games on PS3/PSP, Microsoft around 100 million games on 360.

Even if we'd detract ~100 million bundled Nintendo games from these figures, they'd still be ~400 million copies in front of Sony.

Nintendo is probably the most profitable company in this industry. I see no reason why this should change soon."

and

(Nintendo is) "Still one of the most clever companies in this industry. Always doomed by both, haters and most devoted fans, but sells way more systems and 1st party games each week than Sony and showed us at last and this year's E3 their plans to counter the only real dangerous competitor: smartphone/pad gaming."

I'm sure some cool stuff will come of the new controller (Killer Freaks from Outer Space already has a very intriguing use for it), but by their own admission Nintendo has spent a whole generation alienating a certain type of gamer. Add to that a ridiculously vague unveiling of their new console (I wasn't even sure there WAS a console until Peter Moore mentioned it in passing) with tons of PS360 footage, and people have plenty of reason to be skeptical of the terribly named Wii U. Not all criticism of Nintendo is hate.

Pretty much what I think in summary.

The unveiling was just horrible.

Nintendo shows a console with a bat-shit insane design that is offering something we've already had for years and they are already applying constraints to that very console. They aren't offering anything new to the people who own any of the current consoles, we haven't seen a game that will blow us away visually, we haven't seen the console play a game well in terms of controller input and everything coming out about it in regards to it only makes it's concept seem much more constricted than it should be (one Wii-U controller per console, dodging questions relating to their online implementation, no Gamecube BC, 3DS pads instead of actual sticks, D-Pad under the 3DS pad).

It also doesn't help that they didn't explain their approach very well at their conference and despite the whole 'we want the hardcores' thing they've suddenly decided to jump on, all we got from their conference was a shuriken throwing game, some ports, some Mii's, some lame golf thing and another Mario game.

Nintendo showed me nothing that impressed me, all they've shown is that they took the 3DS approach and have decided that the easiest way to come up with a new console is to think of an old gimmick and bring it back as a new innovation, while also offering nothing good to show off that gimmick. I also can't rely on them to support their own crazy concepts, it's not like they did a great job with it on the Wii outside of Wii Sports. They went for the shock approach again and I don't think it will work this time.

It could all change by next year, they might take some criticisms and work on them, but I've seen what Nintendo did with the Wii, they rarely ever listen and if they don't listen, then I'm not interested. I'm not going to fall for their bullshit a second time.

Now watch as this thread will be filled with Nintendo fans agreeing with you, instantly going into defence mode over a console they know barely anything about and continue to support a company that barely releases any games for their current system and has actually allowed Tiger Woods PGA Tour and a Street Fighter port to be the best releases of the year for their systems. I'd recommend approaching the Wii-U with caution, because I think Nintendo have been a bit lost as of recently and you guys are going to be the ones to suffer in the end.

Just an addition, I laughed at the 'jealousy' claims, jealous of what? That I can actually find a use for my system this year by playing dozens of amazing games? That the future of my system isn't a hanging by a thread called Skyward Sword? That I actually have options in the things I want to do with my system outside of leaving it in a dusty cupboard or playing NSMB Wii for the 50th time? Don't be silly, people have a reason to be critical of Nintendo and their approach to a new console and that is because they have been an extremely sub par console publisher as of recently.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

You have some legitimate points, but what do you mean by the bolded? The big releases for the year are Skyward Sword and Mario Kart 3DS, not what you mentioned...

I don't see it as the hate coming full-circle (though it kind of is, if we're stretching back around to why people hated the GameCube), more as people jumping to immediate conclusions about indefinite things. "Where are the games, where are the specs, what'll the online be like!!" which is something people tend to do with Nintendo a lot, take the gaps in their information and fill them with all kinds of (usually negative) conjecture.

Now the whole problem of gaps of information might reflect poorly on Nintendo, as they never really give out all the information (i still declare that we will never see officially confirmed Wii U specs), but as we've seen from misleading thread title after misleading thread title even in the past five days, people are willing to take casual comments, make them definite, and then use those as declarations against Nintendo. If they're so happy with their "dozens of great games," why belittle the company that, according to your own admission, isn't offering you anything you don't already have?

Skyward Sword and Mario Kart 3DS haven't released yet, when they release then they might be the best, but until then some golf game and a Street Fighter port are going to be the best games on their systems. We don't know if Skyward Sword or Mario Kart 3DS will be good or better, we've seen similar things happen with Metroid: Other M, Epic Mickey and The Conduit, so it's probably better to wait before we name them the best games of the year.
