Forums - Gaming Discussion - First Person Shooter: Mouse, Gamepad or Wiimote?

Keyboard & Mouse - 9/10: The keyboard and mouse is one of the most unnatural input methods for 3D space but since we use the mouse so much for screen movement and the keyboard so much for typing it ends up being one of the most accurate and easy to use. In other words it sucks but we are used to it ...

Wiimote - 8/10: Amazingly natural yet I haven't seen anything which demonstrates why it is better than a keyboard and mouse yet

Gamepad - 5/10: Unnatural and we (practically) never use the analogue stick on our right hand to map to 2D screen space so we lack the experience to do much with it.

 I also agree completely!

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

In terms of "accuracy", and having to play a hard-core frag-fest, the mouse easily wins (nothing comes close, as you need perfect, fast control).

But in terms of "fun", and what I would be most likely to play these days - Wiimote only. I gave up on mouse controlled shooters a long time ago, and gave up on control-pad shooters not long after that.

Still waiting for a Wiimote shooter that sucks me back into playing FPS's.

I've played and enjoyed many PC shooters over the years, but I actually like the mouse least, since it seems too accurate and fast... seems very artificial, like you're not really controlling a character on screen.

The gamepad can be done well: Halo2 controls great: also it's nice to be 'lazy' while playing games sometimes which a gamepad is perfect for. Although it can also be incredibly frustrating (thinks to trying to pull off hard shots in RE4: which should be much improved on Wii).

COD3 for the Wii I enjoyed WAY more than I thought I would, almost completely oweing to the controls. The game was downright tireing to play, since you had to stay constantly on edge, but it was incredibly engageing. After initially being totally confused by the controls, they soon became more natural than any other system could ever be ... OTOH Red Steel controls were a mess: I didn't get past the first level before giving up.

Duck Hunt 10/10 SixAxiS 9/10 Mouse 8/10 Wii Mote 6/10 In my opinoin games like duck hunt and arcades are the best shooting controlles avalible. It gives you a real gun and you aim, the only problem is the screen has to be moved for you. With PS3/360 you don't get the exact feel of a gun, but you have the artificial movment this IMO is the best way to play an epic FPS at this time. The Mouse gives you much better acuracy than any other input or in real life for most people, and the movment is very difficault to get used to (I use a controler for my PC FPS). Very unpleasent feeling to use in the manner of a gun, and with the nun chuck in my bad hand just flailin around movment is very difficault. Mabye I just need to practice more, but I have returned both Medal of Honor and Red steele due to the difficulty. I'm not bashing the WiiMote, I actually quite like it for sonic, much better than on PS3, and am looking forward to it on mario galaxy. IMO PS3/360 have the best controls for FPS.

i don't even see how gamepad could even be categorized with the mouse or wiimote... the mechanism was only developed precisely because you don't have a pointing device.  over the years the mechanism has been refined and people have gotten used to them...

comparing the mouse and wiimote makes sense.  comparing those to a mapping mechanism?  c'mon.

gamepad has come a long way, and is impressive given the limitations, and that's the best thing i can say about it.

the Wii is an epidemic.

All this Wii-mote being kick ass for FPS is all theorical at this point.  I admit Red Steel is the only one I have played but it was a horrible pain in the ass. and it wasnt realistic like I had imagined.

I was keeping my arm locked at the shoulder and using tiny wrist movements to aim. if i tried to aim it like a pistol I had horrible accuracy and would seen get motion sick.  Instead of using thumbs I was using my wrist (why is this better?).  i might be retarded i dunno.

mouse 10/10

pad 7/10

wiimote 4/7

more time woulda helped me out, but my god Red Steel was one of my biggest gaming disappointments of my life.  i was DYING to play it - talked a guy from work into bringing his wii w/him to work - hooked up to the widescreen in the bar area on a 50" widescreen. We fired it up and I still cant quite fathom just HOW disappointed I was.

Keep in mind that , The commericals for the Wii ALMOST had me on the Wii wagon.  But

karma intervened and I got my hands on a PS3 at wally world 7 days after launch and did the FPS thing Resistance style! Long live the Playstation !

If it wasnt for MGS4, the PS3 is unnecessary

It's hard for me to rate the Wii I haven't used it yet, but I've heard the problem is aiming then changing your view and the sensors calculate about where the transition occurs.   With mice and analogs, aiming is looking so it's when you do one the other is automatically there.  Seperating looking and aiming seems to me to require more preciseness in telling the sensors how large the TV is and where the sensor is.

Seems to me it would be hard to circle-strafe with a Wiimote, because you have the analog on the nunchuck for movement, then the Wiimote off-screen to turn your view.  That's the circle-strafe, but then if you want to shoot somebody you'd start just shafing and no longer turning so you can't circle and shoot at the same time.  Am I wrong about this?

Until further clarification and new games for the Wii:

Mouse/keyboard:  8/10 (specialized keyboards/mice up to 9 or 10.  and whoever said this is too        complicated for people is missing the point...it's the most realistic in what type of movements you can pull off and has accurate aiming.  I don't understand why some of you want a challenge and want it to be harder, but whatever).

Wiimote:  7/10

Gamepads:  4/10 with 2 analogs

theres an imaginary box reticule that (depending on how large or small) will determine how long it takes to turn. in red steel you would have to move the cursor to the edge of the screen b/c of a large box reticule but with metroid prime 3 there are settings that allow that "box" to be shrunk so you'll have a much more realistic way of turning.

i read this on ign some time ago so i hope i was able to recall this correctly. can someone back me up on this?

(hopefully im right)
