Here is the week 27 update in terms of the two big consoles in Japan's path to be able to reach the commonly stated (in these sales threads) estimates for 2018 sales (2 mil for PS4, 4 mil for Switch) .

  TWS GD YTD AWN (Change)
PS4 17,834 -21,017 1,007,697 39,692 (+841)
Switch 44,237 -62,792 1,261,377 109,544 (+2511)

TWS - This week's sales
GD - Goal differential, the difference between the average week needed from last week compared to this week's sales
YTD - Units sold in 2018 so far including this week's sales
AWN - Average weekly sales needed to reach the estimate for the console.

Welcome to the one million YTD club PS4. Both consoles are down with no big software releases this week. Next week should be huge for the Switch with both Octopath Traveler and Captain Toad releasing.

Halfway for PS4, but it is quite late. 31% for Switch, Holidays will be massive for sure, but its cutting it close.

Wheres that thread on Ys switch outselling Ys PS4? That's definitely not going to happen now.

Good:

Switch games continue to have decent legs: Mario Tennis, Minecraft, Splatoon, Mario Kart, Kirby, Zelda, Odyssey, and Donkey Kong.
Switch hardware not doing as bad as earlier in the year and is still beating 2017 weeks.
Detroit legs continues to chug along.
Kingdom Hearts continues to chart, which is only positive for the future for this franchise in this market.

Meh:

Zanki Zero doesn't impress, but doesn't do bad either.

Bad:

PS4 hardware sales continues to fail to impress lately and last year is slowly catching up.

Ouch, for anything not called Switch sales are really getting low by now

With Switch already up year over year by 200k, and it doing 3.3 million in 2017 I think it'll be fine.

October, November and December 2017 Nintendo Switch's biggest new games in Japan were Mario Odyssey and far lesser extent Xenoblade 2. While in 2018 it's getting Super Mario Party, Pokemon, Smash and Yokai Watch 4 was just confirmed for this Winter in Japan as well by corocoro.

We can't be far from Splatoon 2 though, right? And after its impact just as the PS4 might fall behind YoY so might the Switch. Taken from the Resetera MC thread:

The 4th chairman of the playstation clan has passed 1 million for the year. In a few weeks it will hit 7m way ahead of the ps3 hitting that milestone and way ahead of most peoples expectations a few years ago. Partay time!

Winter for Yokai has a very high chance of being early 2019

OT amd Captain toad next week with return of splat2 bundle..
. and smash and pokemon pre orders open up...

Shouldn't baseline be what the console sells in an average week with no new releases/special offers etc, rather than just the average sales per week?

You're right, will try to correct that

Edited, hope this gives a much better insight. The baseline for SW is 38752 and 17834 for the PS4.
