Monster Hunter focuses less on dungeon puzzles and more directly on the action. It's selling like hotcakes in Japan. Super Guide isn't the answer to tedious puzzles. They should be reduced or dropped period.

Mario used the SG for parts of the game people still wanted to play, not parts that radically change it.

Japan has never been the bigger consumer of Zelda games, and Monster Hunter appeals to one specific kind of consumer. There is another kind that enjoys puzzles - it's kind of the idea behind the design of Spirit Tracks.

Zelda need not adhere to a single gameplay type.

I didn't state to limit the gamplay to one type. Did you miss the "or" part of my comment. And it was the tedious puzzles I meant, not all the puzzles. Did you miss when I typed the word "tedious"?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

There is no need to be terse, LTNK. If I require an elaboration on someething you said, I would appreciate it if you could deliver that without the condescension.

"Tedious" is far too subjective of a quality to properly discuss in this context.

No, it will not. The expanded audience plays a game to pass the time. If they pick up a puzzle game, to have it break into another genre gets annoying. Same with Zelda. Note the sales of series with the expanded audience, regardless of the overall sales.

The expanded audience has no single reason for picking up a game, they are not a uniform demographic.

That's not what I mean either. You keep getting my points off.

You know how much the traditional gamers hate the water temples. What makes you think less dedicated gamers would tolerate merely milder forms of that? It's not an area that's just like the others but harder. That's why the Super Guide worked for Mario. It was still the Mario areas. It would not work to throw a different kind of gameplay when people are just picking up the game to kill some time.

No, in point of fact, I know no such thing about traditional gamers hating the water temples. I know that they are very much the causes of split opinion among core gamers, but they are far from an object of universal revile.

I don't think I get what you mean in the latter half. "It would not work to throw a different kind of gameplay"? "Mario areas"? I am lost, lik a child in the woods

Everyone who gets lost in these woods becomes Stalfos. Everyone. Stalfos.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

If you know the puzzle by heart, does it still take over a half a minute, or even a full minute? That's the line I'm going by here. Hit three switches in the right order to open a door, fine. You have to get on slow moving platforms, to get to all those switches, not fine. And the SG feature would still require link to get on those platforms.

See what I mean?

Thank you, I see clearly what you mean now.

More, I agree with you. Tedium, as here defined, in puzzle-solving is a problem. The necessity of getting to specific points in the Water Temple to change the water levels in Ocarina of Time was problematic, as was the problem of changing out the Iron Boots. To a degree I think these things have been addressed, though - the Iron Boots were made a C-item, which is immensely more convenient, and in the Water Temple in Twilight Princess the puzzles were designed in such a way that you did not actually backtrack much at all - you went back through areas more than once, but you were changing the way water flowed in an area in such a way that it was actually a brisk, linear experience where water switches were basically exactly where you needed them to be.

The Great Bay Temple was very pleasing for the same reason, though less so than TP's Lakebed Temple.

awesome!

I'm just glad it's Nintendo handling this game rather than some of you guys. I've heard so many comments about how Zelda needs to be more like this or that, it needs to more accessible, it needs to be harder etc etc.

Zelda does not need to be like any other game, Zelda needs to be like Zelda. That's not to say it needs to be exactly like previous games but rather it needs to keep it's own identity. As for difficulty, I didn't mind the difficulty of TP but also I personally wouldn't mind if the new Zelda was a little bit harder.

One question I would like to ask is that after all the fuss around the announcement of Super Guide on NSMBWii, did anyone actually feel it negatively impacted on the game?

I could see a combination of a hint system (toggleable) and Super Guide working well for this game, allowing it to be difficult enough to provide a challenge to seasoned Zelda fans while giving others a helping hand through the harder sections.

Hear, hear! :D

Amazing!! I want this game now!!

MY ZELDA COLLECTION

Masterzack- your zelda collection is legendary. That is an awesome picture.

I also agree with hsrob. I'm so glad the fans do not make Zelda games because it would be disastrous. I just leave it up to the geniuses at Nintendo and then I wait to play one of the greatest experiences thereafter. I like to throw out ideas too but let's not get carried away haha. Zelda needs to be its own experience like it has always been and I'm sure the Zelda team will once again give us a wonderful game.
