I wouldn't say interested in JRPG's would have gradually regressed in Japan but most JRPG fans has moved to handhelds. DQ IX still sold 2.3 million first week and over 4m LTD (still selling) which is more than any previous entries in the series. This is even more what FF7 sold during 90's.
