Well overall I can't say the Wii has had a huge impact on the game industry at large.

It has not become the defacto PS2 successor as many had predicted 2 years ago as the majority of the PS2 franchises have stayed clear of the Wii

Why would PS2 sales migrating to Nintendo be a large impact? It would mean this generation having the same games as the last. That would be a kind of status quo. Personally I think the impact is still happening, look at Natal and PS3 Glowball Stix (tm). Look at the way the industry has reacted to the 'threat' of the Wii. The turmoil amongst journalists, the flailing around by companies to find an audience (EA's ridiculous all-play marketing, for example) is evidence of the disruption.

That is evidence of a disruption in sales/business.  I guess I more wanted to see a revolution in games/gameplay.

I'm still controlling Mario and Link with a joystick and buttons.  And I'm perfectly okay with that... but it's not a Revolution.

Wii Sports I view as a tech demo.  Excellent controls, but not much in terms of fleshed out gameplay.  When are we going to see those games fleshed out as full titles (not necessarily by Nintendo)?  Tiger Woods 10 is pretty good (with Wii motion+), and I think it outsells its HD counterparts because of it... but Punch Out plays best with NES style controls.  I'd love to see a high quality, pure motion controlled, with some sort of single player campaign and online multiplayer, boxing game (improving on Wii Sports)... but nobody's stepped up to the plate.

Fair points. I think Red Steel 2 might be that game. I'm pretty sure others will follow.

I love motion controlled Punch Out!

the xbox sales will keep sliding until natal then it will do as amazingly well

the ps3 will start to shine in 2010 i believe, and i think next year the wii will either come 2nd that year. and in 2011 it will be last

I disagree on 2 points:

Mario Kart - The steering isn't accurate enough.

Mario Galaxy - It controls like an absolute dream and is perfect for the Wii.

Other than that you've got some good points.

I somewhat agree with you on MarioKart.  A joystick is definitely more accurate, I guess I just disagree by thinking the motion controls are accurate "enough" and enough more fun to make it worth playing that way.

Galaxy, for the most part, doesn't use motion controls at all.  There's the shake you give for a second jump, but that could just as easily be replaced with pressing a button (which would be more accurate, as well).  Have you ever seen the Zero Punctuation review of Galaxy?  While I like the game more than he did, I think he was spot on with the controls.
I did enjoy the Manta Ray levels (and rolling the ball, to a lesser extent), but honestly those felt tacked on. Like "Hey, this is on Wii, we should add a motion control level or 2."

I hope it is.  1:1 controls with a sword in an FPS could definitely be awesome.

Really?  I can't keep up with Punch Out with the motion controls.  I just play NES style.  I really like Wii Sports Boxing though (esp multiplayer), but that's more analog, you don't just have "block" and "punch," you can block and punch specific areas depending on how you hold the remote, which is why I like it.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Gearbox, I hear where you're coming from, but...

Look at the Wii sales. They're spiking during the holiday season. Look at the Wii demographics and the most successful products. Moms and kids.

The Wii is a starter console. It practically defines what a starter console is. Kids like games. Kids will get Wiis for the holidays for many years to come, until its replaced by a new starter console.

The Wii will continue to sell well (there are a LOT of kids wanting a game console every year!) until a new starter console replaces it, whether that's the Wii HD, or something else. I don't think the Wii's sales to "non starter"/not-blue-ocean consumers are substantial enough for us to see a drop off of the magnitude you are suggesting, even if the Wii continues to fall out of favor with the traditional console demographic.

The Wii will likely continue to reign as the biggest HW seller throughout 2010. Even in 2011, it will likely retain that spot, unless it is superceded by a Wii HD.

In one way I can say yes your right Ail.

The Industry is looking at PS3 and Xbox360 like it's the defacto, in fact they seem to have gotten over the whole starve one HD platform to boost and control the others successes.

But at the same time it's become clear that the failures of the Industry show that nearly 50% of the gaming populace is not interested in quite a bit of their offerings, as that large portion either didn't buy a HD console. Furthermore the Industry is now seeing stiff competition from Nintendo.

If they leave the Wii alone then Nintendo will dominate that platform no questions asked, which means Nintendo will own nearly 50% of gaming. As it stand’s one could argue that people who bought the PS2 wanted the Square games, one could argue that 3rd parties had elicit share of the PS2 installed base. But on the Wii should a 3rd party falter even a little it becomes clear Nintendo is the dominant software provider.

If Nintendo is left alone to monopolize their platform, the Industries worst fear will come to fruitation, which is 1st party dominance of software publishing. This would put Nintendo in a position where their software is indirectly comparative to 3rd and 1st party software on other platforms.

So in the end there has been an effect on the Industry, it's just that the effect is not like with the Ps2.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Official Huge Monster Hunter Thread:

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

Aside from the motion control which did have some impact, Nintendo benefited alot from Microsoft's marketing and Sony's mistakes surrounding the PS3 price...

Basically Microsoft had done a tremendous job associating its console with fps games/shooters...

This is very good when targeting that market segment, however this is not so good in that in the mind of most adults they do associate the console with shooters and violent games, more so than they would do the PS3 ( even if outside of 5-6 flagship games the games on either console are similar). But fact is the 360 has the shooter image which will repel traditional mums and dads shopping for chrismas gifts for their young children...

So that group is left with the Wii and the PS3 and the PS3 price repelled most of those customers, pushing them in Nintendo's lap...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Lol you really think for a second that either console are taking those seriously ?

So what exactly are the big franchises that will support those new devices ?
