Considering how many developers (and even publishers) are going out of business this gen, I think they could stand a little advice.

It's low sales never made much of a wave. Though has anyone noticed that the goal post of well sold games has moved. Now even though Okami and many similar titles selling better than their equivelant on the PS2 just isn't good enough for gamers and developers. The developers and many gamers hate the fact that Nintendo dominated sales. They probably don't even hate Nintendo. If Nintendo was in distant third sure there would be a bit of picking on, but past that there really wouldn't be so much anti Nintendo passionate fanboys. I am lumping that developers can be just as system fanatical as any gamer because developers are gamers. Nothing is really going to change this generation. It's an oversite to common sense, but the reason the way things are has nothing to do withe sales. It all has to do that the main developers are coming from the PS era. Wii has just started it's era and those gamers are going to take some time to mature into the developers shoes. |
This idea merits promotion; the idea that the industry has basically moved on to a "go big or go home" mentality. You either make something that's going to sell a lot of games really quickly (the MW2's and GTAIV's of the world), or you just plop something niche/low quality out there, but strictly for the purposes of funding the big stuff. All the third parties are chasing the dream of being able to put out constant blockbusters (and even market analysts are trying to encourage this idea), rather than steady sellers or smaller games that are profit-focused.

And, of course, the advice of people on a video game forum would have saved them from this fate?
I am a web developer / designer. I have recently started my own company. I can tell you, these are not good professionals.
1) Firstly, I wouldn't dream of avoiding 50% marketshare no matter how hard it was.
2) I wouldn't dare insult my clients and then expect them to buy my products (EA and their DS "test", Capcom and their "Wii couldn't handle the first screen")
3) I wouldn't accuse my clients for my incompetence (lazy work = no $)
4) I wouldn't differentiate my clients (offer a great website for someone at 500€ and another one a crappy one for the same price)
5) If I start bleeding money left and right, I might consider changing my business plan SO FAR.

You aren't expressing freedom of speech by that. You're just stating you don't care about doing any damn research, on a site where research is actually the point.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

If they dont listen to consumers, who the hell they will listen to?

Not to say that forum-goers are necessarily more qualified, but sometimes top-ranking executives and analysts are stupider than most people would suspect. I mean, look at Detroit. Those execs had 30 years of losing marketshare to the Japanese to try and figure out what they were doing wrong, and didn't figure it out. 30 years. Longer than i've been alive
Point is, this claim that these execs know what they're doing needs to be validated by more than the fact that they are executives, and have been in the business for a while. Neither of those are guarantors of success at all.
