I like 2D Mario best, generally, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 is my favourite game in the series. Followed by Super Mario Brothers 3.

I loved all the 2D Mario games except New Super Mario Bros. DS - the Wii one was much better.

The 3D Mario games I thought were so-so, I didn't hate them, but I felt there were better 3D platformers than Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy; I liked Banjo Kazooie more than Mario 64. Super Mario Galaxy though, was clearly better than anything else in the genre; and Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so good that it almost seems like an insurmountable achievement; I would be surprised if any 3D platformer in the next 10 years was as good.

I prefer 3D Mario to 2D Mario myself. My first Mario game was Super Mario Sunshine, it wasn't until New Super Mario Bros DS came along that I played a 2D Mario game so I don't have that nostalgia to the 2D titles.

Well for me it goes like this:

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (3D)
2. Super Mario Galaxy (3D)
3. Super Mario World (2D)
4. Super Mario 64 (3D)
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2D)
6. Super Mario Bros. 3 (2D)
7. Super Mario Sunshine (3D)
8. New Super Mario Bros. (2D)
9. Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins (2D)
10. Super Mario Bros. (2D)

So while I'm a huge fan of both styles, 3D Mario is unlike anything out there, especially with Galaxy 1 and 2.

I'll go with 2D Mario. I still haven't even picked up Mario Galaxy 1 and 2... I'll probably get them cheap later next year or for Christmas. I just have so many games I haven't even beat/played that I need to concentrate on them rather than buying more games.
