Forums - Gaming - The vgchartz ranking game--The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Why does everybody freak out when somebody gives a supposed 'good game' any less than an 8?

I'll give this game an 8.3. That is all it deserves. Fallout was a much better game.

You need to do Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess and Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros next!

More Wii games.

10 so addictive I needed only one game for many months.

This thread (regarding Elder Scrolls: Oblivion) = two things

1) People who absolutely loved it

2) People who hate games that get universal acclaim so they rate it a 5-6, say "Maybe its just me, but" and throw out quirky tidbits.

The reason why I'm so harsh is this game really requires several hours to be put into it and a love for the RPG genre to appreciate it for what it is. I feel like most people who dislike it also just don't like the genre, so it jades their vote to start with.

I'll throw in my vote as well.

9.9/10

+ I have only positive things to say. Too many to list.

- Nothing negative to say, it would just be nitpicking on small details.

Even though Oblivion is by far the greatest game ever created on our planet, the 10/10 is saved for the hope of a future absolutely perfect game.

7.5 out of 10

+ Amazingly beautiful graphics at the time. The world was really a thing to behold.
+ Patrick Stewart's voice acting
+ Voice acting for all characters
+ Combat is improved over past games. Thanks to hit detection instead of random dice rolls to determine if you hit an enemy or not.
+ Dark brotherhood missions were amazing

- Inferior soundtrack to morrowind
- less interesting artstyle then morrowind (oblivion was more or less a lord of the rings clone in many ways... boring). Whilst Oblivion may have had more colour it simply didn't evoke the same sense of creeping decay and dread that Morrowind did. Not to mention it lacked the beautiful Telvanni cities that were made out of giant plants.
- enemies scale with your level. This ruined the game for me as there was little reward from levelling up apart from having shinier armour.
- No in depth dialogue options. Planescape torment this was not.
- No houses, just guilds.
- Repetitive oblivion gates. One was enough...

It just felt like a step back in many ways to Morrowind and the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong however, it was still a very enjoyable game.

I have just as many wii games as PS3 games as 360 games.  It goes like this.  360 game/Multiplat/PS3 game/Multiplat/Wii game/Multiplat--and that loops continually.

Both good and bad comes from the huge world that is the setting for Oblivion.
You have the freedom to do anything, anywhere but you can also wander off and forget or lose interest in the main quest.
The world is beautiful and feels real with towns, inns, farms, ruined forts etc but it might disappoint when you realize that a lot of NPCs look and sound the same..
During character creation you can customize the look of your character with great detail (never before or since have i been able to make my guy look like me) but during the game you will encounter lots of NPCs that are down right ugly or look very bland.

Overall it's a very good game and a great improvement on Morrowind, i enjoyed the character developement and gameplay (except the vampire part). And after playing Bethesda's Fallout 3 i realized how important Oblivion was in the developer's evolution.

7.5/10

I'm a fan of the D&D genre. I've played PC games: Icewindale, Neverwinter nights and others. I've played console games: Dark Alliance 1 & 2 being the best of the PS2 generation. In all cases the truly great ones have grabbed me from scene 1 and I've played them obsessively until I got finished them staying up until 3am on week nights and suffering at work for weeks, even going through 2 or 3 times with the best of the best.

Oblivion is not one of those games. I probably barely qualify to give a rating because I've only played just enough of it to form an opinion. I heard great things about this game and I was really looking forward to it being one of my favourites. It was one of the games I bought on the day I bought my PS3. But after giving it a few sessions of playing I was simply not engaged by it. And the 10s of hours that one needs to invest in the game to finish it just seems too daunting a task without it really grabbing my attention. It is a totally different playing style than I've ever played with the D&D genre, doesn't work so well in 3rd person and I wasn't particularly enjoying first person mode (not a FP fan).

I can appreciate the general quality of the game which is why it gets a 7.5 from me.

Perhaps I was ruined because I played Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted before I got round to playing Oblivion. I'll hold on to it and perhaps I'll get back into it some time.
