7.5/10
I'm a fan of the D&D genre. I've played PC games: Icewindale, Neverwinter nights and others. I've played console games: Dark Alliance 1 & 2 being the best of the PS2 generation. In all cases the truly great ones have grabbed me from scene 1 and I've played them obsessively until I got finished them staying up until 3am on week nights and suffering at work for weeks, even going through 2 or 3 times with the best of the best.
Oblivion is not one of those games. I probably barely qualify to give a rating because I've only played just enough of it to form an opinion. I heard great things about this game and I was really looking forward to it being one of my favourites. It was one of the games I bought on the day I bought my PS3. But after giving it a few sessions of playing I was simply not engaged by it. And the 10s of hours that one needs to invest in the game to finish it just seems too daunting a task without it really grabbing my attention. It is a totally different playing style than I've ever played with the D&D genre, doesn't work so well in 3rd person and I wasn't particularly enjoying first person mode (not a FP fan).
I can appreciate the general quality of the game which is why it gets a 7.5 from me.
Perhaps I was ruined because I played Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted before I got round to playing Oblivion. I'll hold on to it and perhaps I'll get back into it some time.
