dude, to be truly honest, i see zero difference between the two. its the same concept on both consoles
They are both pretty much the same to me, especially given that most multiplatform (if not all of them these days) will have the exact same achievements or trophies in each.
I still prefer achievements because it is integrated better. A gamerscore shows the total achievement points you've racked up, but I haven't found a simple way to check on a friends thing (without going through the friendlist and checking their id tag) how many trophies they have, also I'm not sure how many I have in total (I know how many I have per game though). One nifty thing I might add about trophies though (which I don't think achievements have) is that you've got a percentage of the amount of trophies you still need to get per game, as opposed to achievements where I think it's the amount of points you can still obtain (rather than a stat showing the number left to obtain). I could be wrong though.
I probably care less about trophies because I started with achievements (and hence the novelty value has worn off).
Personally, I prefer achievements.
Ultimately, neither is better, it just comes down to preference if you even care.
I agree with what you say twesterm except 50% doesn't tell you how many trophies you have? where as 500/1000 does? seriously...?

What? Trophies does give you a percentage number you know.
On another note, and I am sure it has been mentioned before in this thread, the sound of Trophies are just so much better and more satisfying.
I prefer achievements due to the gamerscore system. I like trophies too though.
I'm not a huge fan of either, but in principle I prefer a system with clear tiers and a higher level of differentiation, so I guess Trophies appeal to me a bit more.
I'd like the ability to turn of the notification though - I hate playing an immersive game and having a notification pop up, it's just so silly. For example in Dead Space you're getting into the vibe of feeling alone and threatened, you make a frantic kill, then get told 'woo hoo, you've just killed your xth foe'. It just breaks the spell of SP titles for me. I don't mind in MP, but in SP I want a way to switch off in game notifications.
Sorry, rant over!
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Not possible on the PS3 ?
I would never do it, but I know it's possible on the 360.
OT: I still have the same opinion as I had 3 months ago
