Forums - Sony - Sony: "We love MS's money."

@Ghost4life: Making a differentiative product is never playing it safe. It's the total opposite, a huge gamble.
Of course Nintendo played it safe as much as it could, if it didn't do that with their products, it could have been bankrupted years ago.

For Wiis success, Iwata said in E3 2006, that he hopes that Wii surpasses PS2 as the best selling videogames console some day. Maybe the instant success was a surprise, but at least Iwata had a clue about what to expect.

"we're very profit driven, we're interested in return on investment in a fairly short period of time."

So is Microsoft Tretton, and it's worked, the 360 hardware started making a profit from 2007.

About what he said of Nintendo: GASP! It's actually possible for thse companies to respect one another and compliment them when they do something well?? *faints*

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Really??

Anyway, I think the point he is trying to make is that MS will throw money at anything and accept billions in lost. Take the original xbox.

In comparison to Nintendo who can sell a low spec console for more money than a far superior x360 and make decent profit.

Either way, simply put, if MS is currently making a profit on x360 HW even after another pricecut, then Nintendo are truely gods in this console business to sell a far lower spec (and therefore much cheaper to produce) product for far more money for so long and totally wipe the floor with the competition.

I think that's what Tretton meant.

@thekitchensink: It's a little hard not to give credit for Nintendos success. However, they deliver a casual, youth-orientated experience, you can always try to marginalise the success.

O Rly?  Where'd you read this?  Can I have a link from a respected source?  The only things I've read lately are that they lose money on every console, just like SONY.  I have to call bull shit.

Of course they could afford to be more patient, but they want to be leaders so it's only natural to invest heavily asap.

BTW, what he says about Nintendo is complete bullcrap. Nintendo never was more profit driven than any other company. They were playing safe by trying to differentiate their product while remaining in the low cost segment. Hitting solid gold the way they did was simply unexpected.

O RLY???

Nintendo is the only company of all that even when it is in 3rd place, it still makes a lot of profits (they made with 21M Gamecubes an amount that competes with the amount Sony made with the PS2, at least till 2006), all their handhelds were (and are) massively popular, printing cash like crazy... The only surprise was the Wii in the innovation area, but their profit model has not changed...

All companies are profit driven, but some models are designed for getting cash since the beginning, other models are designed to loss amounts to later get a big return, with different variations (MS usually risks a lot, gets a strong marketshare and then profits, Bill Gates used this model with Windows after dumping OS/2 partnership, i think that was the only time they didn't have the money backup to support the risk, so it was a sink or swim moment)....

WRONG!!!! PS2 made much more profit than GameCube, Nintendo didnt made more money with only GameCube, they also had GBA and DS to make big profits

But that is predominantly what they deliver, don't see how Tretton is marginalising the success.

It's all about the game.

Xbox came out in 2001, R&D comes from 2000, it took 7 years for the division to make a profit... SCE has shorter periods for return of investment, usually is one year, but with the PS3+Economy they're still losing after 3 years, if they make a profit this year, the next one or the one after that, it's still a shorter term than MS's EDD division (but a new record for SCE)...

Of course, Nintendo are the kings of profit...
