@Ghost4life: Making a differentiative product is never playing it safe. It's the total opposite, a huge gamble.
Of course Nintendo played it safe as much as it could, if it didn't do that with their products, it could have been bankrupted years ago.
For Wiis success, Iwata said in E3 2006, that he hopes that Wii surpasses PS2 as the best selling videogames console some day. Maybe the instant success was a surprise, but at least Iwata had a clue about what to expect.
