Forums - Nintendo - Was Wii's price ever a problem?

Who says Wii price wasn't ever a problem especially with wii sport you have to spend $60 for another controller? The fact that a $50 cut made a huge impact on sales obvious shows that to a lot of people $50 isn't just pocket change to them. $50 could be the difference between getting their children a Wii or not for Christmas.
Just like someone pointed out in another thread ps2 sold the most units when it was under $200.

I posted that price with Wii was not an issue, though it seems I was wrong in part, given that sales doubled from last week.

yeah if sales doubled, it means there was some buyers that were deterred by it.
Heck i'd buy a PS3 in an instant if it was only 10$, so price is always an issue.

But as said up there, if they had had a better lineup in the past 18 months, then yeah, sales might have kept strong longer. That's only due to the weak 3rd party offering though.

Don't underestimate the power of a lower price during a massive recession.

A lower price will just about always make a difference, assuming the price isn't being dropped on a product that is either on the verge of being discontinued due to consumer indifference, or being replaced. And that's regardless of economic conditions although lower prices in tougher economic times will naturally be received positively every single time.

I'm really not sure why so many people have been saying otherwise. It's probably coming mostly from those were were or still are of the notion that price doesn't mean anything for the Wii, followed quickly by a reference to "Blue Ocean Strategy!"

Nintendo will sell a lot of consoles at $199 (bigger sub $200 market), and will likely sell even more to a broader audience when it drops to or under $149.

Can someone have a look at how many units of a console sell at what price?

As far as I recall, >50% sell at a price tag of 199 or lower. So price is always a big issue

I actually thought the Wii would be 149.99$USD at launch; I still bought it first chance I got though. Wii was actually undervalued originally since so many people were paying more for it than what Xbox 360 was selling for, Ebay prices were around 600$USD for more than a year.

That pretty much holds consistent for virtually every console that ever ended a generation with the longest stint of time on the market (ie. the most successful).

It's for that very reason that it continually boggled my mind that many insisted price didn't matter for the Wii and seemed to be under some fantasy delusion that the Wii would be priced at $249 for presumably its entire production run since "the Wii doesn't need a price cut" "Blue Ocean Strategy means not competing on the basis of price" etc.

What's even more boggling is that some of those same people are now questioning Nintendo's decision to drop price (which based on early US sales, has been largely successful) despite having been of the mind this entire generation that Nintendo can do no wrong.

It seemed to me that the only way Nintendo could hit their hardware projections this year (since they never dropped the numbers even as sales were consistently down YoY) was through a sub $200 price point, and apparently more than one person at Nintendo was of the same frame of mind.

isnt because its casual then price could be an issue for some? thats what i think

I was actually sad to see it at 250 back in 2006. I'm poor so yeah. Still got it on Day 1 though. :3

and yet, I still think it's too early to drop the price. That seems odd even to me. XD
