@Mars

don't insult motorstorm which is a million seller

Heavenly Sword has fallen flat, it's time to accept facts.....PS3 fanboy (I'm probably in this category) or not

when a game is hyped up to be the next God Of War and sells 80K in the first week, it is considered a flop

 Same was said of Resistance, its a flop it sold so bad Insomniocs should leave the PS brand.  And then what happend.  Ohh Motorstorm the Ps3 savior it failed its a flop, now look at sales.

Heavenly will easily do 500k, that pretty good for a new ip in a small category like action on a 5 million user base.  Lets get real GoW2 did what on PS2s huge user base ? you expected similar on PS3s user base ?  All games are hyped, most dont ever live up to it.  Espeically when the target is God of War.

@Mars

well then they were wrong

cus resistance is a mega hit for a launch title

Motorstorm is a huge hit

HS can at most do 350K in USA, in EU less than that, n in JAP even less

So we stand at 700K

^^^^

Which might I add I expect Ratchet to get in USA alone

This confirms MSG4's multiplat status. Why else would they need so many developers for one game unless some of them were working on a 360 port?

You should read this:

Programming detailed car models on the PS3 is a ridiculously time-consuming process. "For Gran Turismo 1, one car was one day's work for one man," Yamauchi said. "For GT3, one car was one man's work for 30 days. For GT5, one car is one man's work for 180 days."

I can't find it anymore but I am pretty sure that their are more than 100 maybe 200 devs
working at GT5.

I understand that they need a lot of Devs for MGS4.

 I can really see why the DS and PSP are getting so much support. Their costs are reportedly around $300-400k and $1-2 million respectively. That's bargain basement, and have a much higher chance of turning a profit, even with their lower price tags ($30-$40 for both systems now)

Really? You seem awfully keen on shooting down anyone that actually seem to have a clue on the subject of cost of labour.

Anyway, I might as well add that my company charge about $11-$12k per man-month from publishers for the advance development budget. If we're lucky we have 10% profit from this advance, but usually we're just barely breaking even.

We're not the most expensive developer out there but we're not the cheapest either. I've heard numbers from $9k to $15k per man-month. This gives us a range of $108k - $180k per year per developer.

So going back to the initial $100k a year claim, I'd say it is a pretty spot on estimate.

Is that fact enough for you?

Plus there is the reported 500k minimum. 500,000 x $60 = $30,000,000. Take a few dollars off each game sale for lisencing fees and other things, and you have $20-$25 million left over. Of course not having to use your own engine can reduce that considerably (Unreal 3 Engine), but something tells me Konami isn't using middleware, and they certainly want this to be a showcase game for the system. Hence I'm guessing $20 million is the minimum they are spending.

Yet even if they spend twice that much (including marketing), it would just take a million copies sold to turn a profit. Even now there are enough PS3's out to sell that many.

according to fanboy, developer only make 2x Mc Donald wage, and that team of 200 cost below 20 mil to make MGS4 for the easy to program PS3 and even a Mc Donald employee are able to cook it out. Thats the main reason why developer's wage are so low to keep cost down.

hmm Pk9394 you could be onto something, maybe thats why controls were so painfull in lair, they had mickyD's employees program for it, maybe lair was done by walmart night shift, they went out on a limb for MGS4 and spent the extra dough for target employees. heh
