I think it has a good shot at it.
1. It is a Gran Turismo game.
The series averages 10M units per title in the main franchise (dicludes Prologues, concepts, ect.).
2. It is on a handheld.
Theoreticaly, I have always imagined that a handheld game should outsell its console couterparts. Many homes will have 1 console to multiple people, were a handheld is a personal device which should be exclusive to each person. In theory that should aquate to high hardware, and software sales (although PSP not followed the path of normal handhelds).
3. Extream emphasis on community.
Sony looks to be trying to turn GT into the pokemon for PSP. They have a deep collection system, and ad hoc battles. Cars are much more popular than Pokemon, so agin, in theory GT PSP should be able to sell more than Pokemons highest selling game.
4. The Automotive Community
Car culture is massive all around the world. There are car events going on 365 days a year, and for the first time ever GT gets to go to the show without Sony promoting it. Gamers around the world will show up to Nascar, Rally, F1, Indy, NHRA, and other races with GT PSP in their pocket. They will also be at a multitude of other car events, including auction, car shows, trade shows. PERHAPPS, one day we will even have GT PSP get togethers were people can race in tournoments.
5. PSP to PS3, and the big daddy GT5
Polyphony has already made it clear that GT PSP and GT5 will be conected. Many have claimed that Sony is working extreamly hard to get the PSN part of this game down to a T. I think that GT5, and GT PSP will work together to push the series way beyond any of the previous iterations in sales figures. We have recently seen this with Mario Kart between the DS, and Wii. Gran Turismo has historically been a much bigger franchise than Mario Kart, so I think that this same set up could push GT into the 20M sales catagory.
So there it is. I am going to go ahead and say GT PSP, and GT5 will each sell between 15 and 20M units. That would easly make GT PSP the best seller on the platform, and would push GT5 to the top of the PS3's list also. It may sound crazy to some, but I think GT has always had a lot of room to grow, and I think that GT PSP is going to help show a much wider audiance what GT is all about. GT was one of the first titles that sold to non gamers. It is more than a game in many ways. It is almost a car enthusiast applictaion more than it is a game. A place were car buffs can have the chance to hop behind the wheel of many cars they will never own.
Only time will tell, but I think we will be seeing GT PSP, and GT5 a top the sales charts for years to come once they launch.
